This isn’t a diary, just a pointer to a really great guest essay in the New York Times. Cass Sunstein explains “Why I Am A Liberal” by explaining in great detail what liberalism is and is not. He describes liberalism’s six pillars — “freedom, human rights, pluralism, security, the rule of law and democracy” — and goes on to explain how the philosophy is applied to a great number of modern issues and situations. I was drawn by his comment that some people on both the right and left are illiberal, and had to read through for his description of an illiberal leftist. It was a delightful and most enlightening read and I would love to hear what others who can access the original essay think about it.
