What is Patriotism? [1]

I was recently confronted by a neighbor I did not know about a post I had written on a local website where I asked people if they recited the Pledge of Allegiance before their various community meetings such as our HOA Board Meeting.. I stated no position myself, but just asked a series of questions about the pledge. My neighbor, however, was livid. How dare I question the Pledge let alone refuse to recite it.

He claimed to be a descendant of the heroes of Fort McHenry and the creation of Star Spangled Banner. I congratulated him for his lineage, but he was undeterred. In his mind, I was “unpatriotic” for refusing to recite the Pledge – something I never said was the case.

What is patriotism? Reciting the Pledge of Allegiance at your HOA meeting? Singing the national anthem? Voting? Displaying the American flag on your home? Being a member of a political party? Paying your taxes? Having a copy of the US Constitution on your desk? Is protesting patriotic? I live in a 55+ community and came of age 60 years ago this month. Next week is the 60th anniversary of President Kennedy’s murder. I remember the subsequent political assassinations, the Vietnam war and the associated protests, and horrible events of September 11, 2001.
