"BAD Tesla" s/n [1]

Daily KOS has more than its fair share of comments, and a concurrent diary, that are angry self-righteous “liberal” BS re Tesla (but they are not liberal in the sense of liberal thought or rational thinking).

There is no question Musk can be an anti-Semitic maddeningly ignorant and arrogant jerk. He is also head of two corporations that have done more to advance endeavors in space and reignite public interest in space exploration, and the other corporation has done more to end the age of fossil fuels than any other corporation or government in the world with the possible exception of China.

In my twenties I learned the futility of trying to live outside the infrastructure of the place I live. The system is designed to ignore my attempts to live outside it. I have no influence if I am not part of it, if I can be ignored like a homeless person. From my place as a part of the system I can be and have been an agent of positive change.

I put my money and my efforts into the most productive things I have the ability to engage in to create positive change politically and otherwise to do as much as I can to ensure my children and grandchildren have a livable planet. That means doing what I can to elect Democrats, donating to environmental and social change organizations, putting solar panels on my roof, super insulating buildings I own, making plans to convert them to solar, buying Tesla Stock, and January 1 buying a Tesla Model Y.

Were it not for Tesla, China would own the world EV market. Western corporations were asleep while China developed modern EVs, but we didn’t know it because their sales were limited to the Chinese market and that includes buses and I think trucks as well, while Tesla was still a start up and lonely Leaf was mournfully flapping in the breeze, ignore by all.

US government allowed VW to build an EV charge network across the US instead of paying huge fines for faking diesel emissions. That gave VW pretty much a monopoly on EV charging that they totally screwed up the way GM bought trolley companies and ran them out of business. However, Tesla on its own built out its own charging network across this nation and Canada that is reliable and fast and does not bog down with use or grid demand. Tesla designed a superior plug for charging and that plug is now standard. If not for Tesla the US would be saddled with insufficient numbers of and inadequate reliability of EV charge stations across our nation. EV adoption would have taken decades longer than it will because of Tesla.

A year ago fools on this site were slapping each other on the back with glee that asshole Musk and Tesla were toast because Tesla stock was crashing badly and it would drop even further after dropping to about $100/share around the New Year. I advised “all in buying”. The Tesla/Musk sages on KOS were gleefully predicting Tesla would drop to $25/share, no more than $50/share.

Tesla has been up to about $260 in the last few weeks, and then dropped down to $205 or some such. In this past week Tesla has been at $256 or so, and now is at $234. In any case anyone who followed my advice last year to go all in is up 134%.

TESLA IS NOT A CAR COMPANY and can’t be compared to other car companies. Vehicle manufacturing is only one thing Tesla does. Like GE back in the day. GE wasn’t just a stove manufacturer. Tesla is more a tech company than car company and its AI self driving (dumped 500,000 lines of code to start over using its AI to train a new self driving) is much of the reason its stock price is up lately. It is a grid power back up company. It is a solar roof company. A power wall company. Tesla is a battery company rapidly advancing battery technology. Tesla is EV charge company now franchising its chargers. Tesla is an EV truck company.

Are you going to divest and stop using Apple products because it is a monopoly and has evil manufacturing processes? Google because it is an all knowing megalomaniac monopoly and its search engine may reach singularity? Meta because it’s evil, like its CEO? Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobil because they are evil monopolies that support radical right politics (all the other cell phone companies contract from those three providers)????

Are we supposed to completely disengage and boycott all of American mainstream life. That is the logical extension of the rational for attitudes about Tesla by posters to Daily KOS.

Also: Tesla is franchising its superior charge network. Tesla grid battery back up is so much better than the competition that there is a five year wait for fulfillment though it costs significantly more than the competition. Tesla powerwalls are superior, and has inspired competition and that is a good thing. It wasn’t a market before Tesla. Same with solar roofs. Tesla created the market, there are now others.

Not buying a Tesla and not buying Tesla stock is a meaningless gesture that is noticed by no one and affects nothing.

However, me buying Tesla has multiple positive impacts: it is a drop in the bucket increasing the value of the stock, and me buying a Tesla is another drop in the bucket increasing the value of Tesla the company, but not just Tesla, the acceptance of EVs in general. I crisscross the country a couple a few times a year. That is a lot of people I will be talking to about driving an EV all over this country being an emissary, a sales person of the the idea that EVs are a feasible choice for everyone. These things are among the most positive impacts I can have to ensure my children and grandchildren inherit a liveable world.
