Here is the link to Part 1 of this diary — "It's the Autonomy, Stupid!" — The Week in Editorial Cartoons, Part 1 The diary is about the shellacking given by the voters last week to the Republican Party on the issue of abortion rights. Take a look at it. Thanks.

A Warning from the Recent Past

Echoes of an Earlier Time

Most people on DK are very familiar with Sinclair Lewis’s excellent novel about the dangers of Fascism during the 1930s when the pillars of American democracy and capitalism were shaken to the core by the Great Depression.

The Past is Prologue

x In recognition of Trump’s unhinged, authoritarian Veterans Day rant, here are a few cartoons drawn during his 2016 campaign and early days in office. Hard to believe so many missed the fascist echoes. pic.twitter.com/UjiEqTwdvh — John Cole (@ColeToon) November 13, 2023

Economic turmoil contributed to the rise of Fascism in several countries including Germany, Italy, and Spain. The world would pay a heavy price in the 1940s as World War II resulted in tens of millions of casualties. After six long years of conflict, Fascism was finally defeated and some semblance of “normalcy” would eventually make a comeback in everyday life.

It Can't Happen Here is a cautionary tale about the fragility of democracy, an alarming, eerily timeless look at how fascism could take hold in America. Written during the Great Depression when America was largely oblivious to Hitler's aggression, it juxtaposes sharp political satire with the chillingly realistic rise of a President who becomes a dictator to "save the nation." It Can't Happen Here remains uniquely important, a shockingly prescient novel that's as fresh and contemporary as today's news. Link Eerily Similar Pose Distant relatives? It’s About Time

x As we learned from Mein Kampf, when a demagogue tells you what he is going to do, believe him. Reporters must ask all GOP candidates for all offices if they endorse these views. If the reporters don’t, they are failing at their jobs. https://t.co/VQnw6TRHev — Jonathan Alter (@jonathanalter) November 13, 2023
