The “horse race” coverage of candidates for the 2024 election often puts former president Trump and President Biden on basically equal footing. Never mind that one is a twice-impeached former president whose documented lies literally fill a book and multiple indictments, and the other is a good-faith leader, not perfect but trying to do something positive about the economy and the environment.
MSM outlets often fail to point out their radically different resumes. Newsweek runs this headline: “Maps Show Biden's New Nuclear Bomb Compared to Most Powerful US Weapons”. www.newsweek.com/…
Really? Did President Biden shepherd this weapon’s research and development? Did he request itemized funding? Do all the previous nuclear weapons have a presidential attribution? Careless and/or misleading headlines like this do not serve the public’s need for information.
This is as loaded as Trump’s allegation that cases against him originate from “the Biden Department of Justice” even when investigations began under Trump. Or the GOP’s reference to the “Biden Crime Family” (no mention of the “Trump Crime Family”, which seems to be a real thing”). Hilary Clinton’s regrettable choice of words to describe right-wing extremists as “deplorables” is weighed against Trump’s description of Democrats as “vermin”; both “Communist” and “Fascist” (oxymoron); and “radical Leftist thugs”. Only one of these rhetorical descriptions suggests action, such as expulsion or extermination.
The “both sides” paradigm and the broad-brush painting in reporting and punditry too frequently ignore context and historic and moral accountability. The result is an ill-informed or misinformed electorate.
