Get ready for more “excitement guaranteed” after seven months of investigation and study SpaceX has received the modified launch license from the FAA. The intention is to launch Booster 9 and Ship 25 at 0700 CST on Friday November 17.
Many will remember the first launch attempt of a stacked Starship, Booster 7 and Ship 24, on April 20th 7 which ended in an explosion of the vehicle and the destruction of the surface of the launch pad. SpaceX has redesigned the pad with a water deluge shower head and will be turning up the thrust of the 32 Raptor engines to get it away from the pad more quickly.
The FAA had requirements SpaceX had tp meet involving the engineering of the vehicle and US Fish and Wildlife did a review of the environmental impacts of continued operations in Boca Chica, Texas. The FAA passed their review last week and today it was announced that the environmental review was completed and approved.
Some differences with this vehicle from 7/24 include : a new fire suppression system under the skirt of the booster, hardened cabling to withstand fires, an electrical gimballing system for the thirteen central engines replacing a hydraulic system and a hot staging ring under Ship 25 to allow a different method of separation from Booster 9. Also the Flight Termination System has been made more robust to guarantee that the vehicle can self destruct upon command quickly.
There will be no payload on Ship 25 and the flight plan does not include an orbital insertion. The ship will be deliberately allowed to reenter over Hawaii and crash into the Pacific. The booster will attempt to flip and boostback to attempt a soft landing in the Gulf of Mexico.
I am excited to see the largest and most powerful rocket ever made try this- Excitement is Guaranteed!
