Germany's Love of Israel [1]

The Israeli invasion of Gaza has caused significant outrage in the U. S., in Europe, and even among the pro-peace movement in Israel itself. Outrage in Germany, however, has been almost completely suppressed. Even JEWS in Germany who oppose Israel’s actions have been stiffled. The German government is allied with extremely hawkiish pro-Israel Jewish groups, and official policy supports Netanyahu and the Israeli right-wing no matter what.
The usual explanation for this state of affairs is that, supposedly, the German elite remains deeply traumatized by World War II and by what the Nazi regime did to Jews at that time. Hence, out of an overpowering sense of remorse and guilt, elite Germans now feel obligated to support Israel without questiion. This explanation is dubious.
It should be remembered that Germany was never fully de-Nazified after World War II. The Cold War started even before the hot war came to an end. Former Nazis were needed to run West Germany and to serve as allies in the fight against the Soviet threat. As a result, fascist ideas and concepts of ‘German superiority’ lived on, although submerged and often denied.
Today’s German elite knows Zionist history. They know that Jabotinski and his group of Zionist trained with Mussolini’s Fascist Navy in the 1930s, and that Mussolini referred to his admired friend, Zionist leader Zeev Jabotinsky, as ‘the Jews’s fascist’. They know that a prominent Zionist in the 1930s remarked that “Hitler had the right ideas and methods,’ but that Hitler had gone wrong by thinking that Germans were the ‘superior race’. JEWS were actually the superior race, according to this Revisionist Zionist leader.
Germany’s elite knows that Zionists were welcome guests in Nazi Germany, and were even allowed to fly their Zionist flag in the Third Reich. This was part of the so-called ‘transfer agreement’ by which the Zionist settlements in Palestine became preferred customers of Nazi-produced goods. The German elite also knows that leftist Jews (Albert Einstein, Hannah Arendt, and dozens of others) condemned the political movement which today governs Israel in a letter to the New York Times, in 1948, openly labeling Begin and his followers as FASCISTS.
And the German elite knows that Jews in Israel/West Bank/ Gaza today number fewer than the Palestinian Arabs they rule over and suppress. (Just as Germans were a minority in the Greater Reich and the lands that it controlled in the early 1940s).
So why does the German elite support Israel’s neo-fascist regime no matter its crimes?
I believe members of the German elite sees in Israel a society akin to what Germany was under National Socialism. For some Germans there is simple admiration for Zionist-fascism, a fond reflection of what German power once enabled the Third Reich to be. For others, the brutal fascism of Israel today is the very best excuse Germany could have for its own fascist past.
“Well, you can’t single us out for blame. We aren’t the only ones. Even the Jews themselves have found the fascist temptation too much to resist.”
It isn’t a ‘de-nazified’ German elite, filled with remorse, that now rushes to support the horrendous actions of neo-fascist Israel. Instead, it is the lingering current of fascism in German culture that resonates with Zionist-fascism, and leads members of the German elite to suppor in Israel ideas and policies Germany itself once embraced.
