I haven’t seen anyone refer to the interview Brian Tyler Cohen did with Nancy Pelosi on Nov 11, 2023. She is definitely not fading into the sunset and Cohen does a great job giving her space to give her thoughts on numerous issues.
Regarding the Democrats election sucessess last week, she talked about how pundits are not on the ground, when they concluded that the Dobbs decision was old news. Democrats are on the people’s side on the issues, so it was a matter of getting people out to vote in these off-year elections. Grassroots activists welcomed help in VIrginia, so it worked well.
About Republcan extremism on abortion, she says, well they want to win their primary, but do they really believe those things or is it political expediency?
About Youngkin and the press trying to paint him as a moderate, Pelosi said,
“If we had not had the success we had in VIrginia, this guy was on his way to a Presidential campaign. He’s such a weakling. He has money, so he bought into becoming the Governor...I don’t see the vision, I don’t see the knowledge, I don’t see the strategic thinking about unifying our country in him. ...I don’t get it about the press. I don’t know if it’s about corporate America supporting ads and the rest of that or what. I mean, I’m very disappointed because the freedom of the press is the protection of our democracy. “
Cohen asked if she had given Mike Johnson any advice. When she congratulated him on his election to Speaker of the House, she told him about her favorite speech by Ronald Reagan and how Speaker Johnson might want check it out. (In it, Reagan talked about immigration in a positive light. It’s the last few paragraphs of this speech. www.reaganlibrary.gov/... )
One of the things she emphasized again and again is that Congress needed the outside mobilization to achieve the greatest accomplishments. She wanted Brian’s listeners to know that we have to play our part. For example, action on HIV/AIDS was the result of the hard work of activists. The political power the activists amassed helped achieve marriage equality.
I encourage you to listen to this interview. It’s just under 27 minutes long, but she covers a lot of topics. I can’t do it justice here.
She clearly thinks a lot about unifying the country and the future. I’m so glad we still have our former Speaker fighting for us.
