What a Difference an Election Day Makes [1]

After panicked Democratic experts clutched their pearls over a downbeat Biden poll a year out from the next presidential election, the coattails of Joe Biden swept across the electoral landscape. If we see one more tv hit of David “Ralphie” Axelrod vulgarly suggesting President Biden drop out of the race, he should have a bar of Christmas Story soap put in his mouth. The former Obama chief adviser sheepishly pushed for Biden to reconsider a second term run while at the same time praising the debate performance of former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley. What a difference an election day makes. The thought that Ms. Haley is gaining ground because she stood next to Vivek Ramaswamy—possibly the most ill-informed and annoying man in politics is just as irritating as Vivek himself. If that is what is keeping a weak GOP bench from flying off into the air, America is in trouble.

Tuesday, in states like Pennsylvania—where I reside; young voters pointed the way to the future for the Democratic party and its ideas. Republicans are clinging, like guns and bibles, to the misperception that young people want to kill babies and are complacent about a future of dirty air to breathe. Also, marketing bulletproof backpacks and teaching toddlers to hide under their desks in the face of school shootings is not sustainable and makes as much sense as ‘duck and cover’ during the Cold War. If Wednesday’s debate demonstrated the GOP bench strength, they should consider hiring coach Deion Sanders as a recruiter. Watching Haley call Ramaswamy “scum” was, sadly, the highlight of the night. Meanwhile, Florida Gov. DeSantis was a cliché machine, Tim Scott tossed around rhetorical bibles, and Chris Christie continued his audition for Lord of the Flies.

Lies were easily and later fact-checked, like abortions up to nine months and DeSantis wanting to repeal a law that does not exist [The Green New Deal]. At one point, Ramaswamy called the Jewish President of Ukraine a Nazi. Ramaswamy’s campaign added another meme to the alternate facts excuse of former Trump campaign aide Kellyanne Conway, saying Ramaswamy “kind of oscillated in his words.” After being confronted for a second time by Morning Joe’s Mika Brzezinski over his lie that non-emergency abortions are performed in the ninth month, the former New Jersey governor amended his statement, “Mika, you’re the one who’s not being honest,” Christie replied. “I did not say there was abortion in the ninth month. What I said was that the law in New Jersey and New York and Illinois and California permits it, and you can’t deny that that’s the truth because it is,” Christie shot back. Of course, the obvious inference from Christie was that women are walking into abortion clinics in their ninth month and saying, Nah, changed my mind.

Not only does that not happen—unless under the most extreme medical circumstances, it is insulting to women and families. One would think that the rejection of a woman’s body autonomy would have sunk in by now. Red and blue states have overwhelmingly been voting and telling Republicans to stay out of their bedrooms and doctor’s offices. Overwhelmingly, Americans are telling Republicans to do something about the proliferation of guns in society, only to be met by wagging fingers with thumbs in their ears mocking the Second Amendment. For many years, I have listened to Conservatives accuse me of wanting a “nanny state.” I would prefer that; to a state government of wannabe Gods.
