We’ve all heard over and over again how important exercise is to maintaining good glucose control. However, sometimes life puts obstacles in our path making it hard to do the things we know we should. What if you can’t go to the gym and run/walk on a treadmill, or even walk around your block. What if you can’t do yoga, or tai chi or swim because you need a walker, or wheelchair or have some other problem that makes even standing difficult?

There is still a way for you to get some exercise – armchair exercise. These are exercises you do while seated making them perfect for those in wheelchairs, with balance issues, or with difficulty standing.

You can add weights like small one pound weights or water bottles or a can of veggies in each hand. You can also use resistance bands to make the work out more intense.

Here are some example videos from YouTube. These folks are all trainers or physical therapists – not just some influencer so they know what they are doing.

First up is some strength training with weights

x YouTube Video

Next up a 30 minute workout using resistance bands

x YouTube Video

Next we have some seated Yoga

Last up we have a lively workout with Motown hits.

If you go to YouTube you will see that most folks in the videos above have their own channels and have many different seated exercise routines so if you like the personality of one of them in particular you can do more with them. I’m kind of partial to the Metro Silver Sneakers workouts – they have about a dozen on their channel with all kinds of music – 80’s, Michael Jackson, Queen, Gospel, etc.
