''We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality."

That quote from George W Bush’s Senior Advisor, Ron Suskind, is what I thought of when I was listening to this clip of the 60 Minutes interview of John Eastman. More specifically, about republicans creating their own reality as a means to an end.

x John Eastman went on @60Minutes on Sunday to dig himself in deeper for his role in the Jan 6 Capitol Insurrection. pic.twitter.com/MTCE31vJQz — Amee Vanderpool (@girlsreallyrule) November 6, 2023

It’s kind of a long segment, so let me break it down a bit for you.

At minute 4:23 Greg Jacob, legal counsel to VP Pence said, “It really was him inventing something without any historical roots or any historical foundation and then desperately trying to find some hook in the constitutional text that neither history, nor structure, nor practice, nor common sense supported.”

At minute 7:30 Eastman falsely alleges that GA election workers put “extra” ballots in a secret folder in the machine that they could then use to boost Pres. Biden’s numbers. He also gave false and/or misleading testimony to the Georgia legislature about the number of prisoners and dead people voting.

At minute 12:05 Jacob said about Eastman, “He was mostly concerned with the results and didn’t really care how many laws had to be broken to get there.”

This interview is highlighting one of the hundreds of examples of republicans working to create a false reality that only serves to benefit them and their financial backers.

I’ve long recognized that republicans are willing to lie in such blatant ways, so it’s no surprise that their lying leads them to a different public facing reality. It is, however, the first time I thought back to Suskind’s shockingly public statement. I guess you could even add the word evil into that quote and be accurate.

Speaking of perpetuating their reality, we now have the Moms Faux Liberty group trying to get librarians arrested for distributing their false reality of what constitutes pornography.

x 1. Two members of @Moms4Liberty have reported several Florida librarians to law enforcement, claiming the librarians committed felonies by distributing pornography to minors.

Popular Information obtained the video from the Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office.

x 3. The "porn" at issue is actually a YA novel, Storm and Fury. The book is mostly about humans and gargoyles fighting demons.

There are a few passages w/sexual themes, but it's recommended by the School Library Journal, Barnes & Noble, and others for high school students pic.twitter.com/w8sXVfAu4j — Judd Legum (@JuddLegum) November 6, 2023

As Judd notes further down in the thread, “Florida law, however, bans distributing a book w/sexual content if it is "harmful to minors." Under Florida law, a book is only "harmful to minors" if it "[p]redominantly appeals to a prurient, shameful, or morbid interest." This is a book about fighting demons.”

According to Judd, in his newsletter version of this story, “Tapley told Popular Information that any book that has a "sex scene" is pornography and not "appropriate for minors." She did acknowledge that there may be exceptions for "extreme classics." But the books Moms for Liberty is targeting, Tapley says, are "without significant literary value."

Ok, so pornography is ok sometimes, and not other times? Make it make sense! Also what the hell are “extreme classics” and why are she and her ilk the judge of what has significant literary value?

The hypocritical leaders of the extremist conservatives are happy to have people like this fool & tool of a woman to do their bidding for them, especially because even if they’re unsuccessful with their challenges, they are likely to be successful by creating a chilling effect with their work.

I think we’re all very aware of the goals of people like Jennifer Tapley, Mike Johnson, Amy Coney Barrett, Brent Kavanaugh, and others — they’re big time christian nationalists and want to force us to live under their demented world view.
