Quick Tuesday Afternoon Report on Hope Springs GOTV in Ohio & Allegheny Co (Election Day) [1]

This is it! The final hours of the November Election in Ohio and Pennsylvania. I don’t know about you, but i’m ready for this thing to be over. There have been sporadic problems with voters getting hot under the collar and most of the reports i am seeing say there is heavier turnout than most expected. A few election day issues but nothing that the myriad county boards of elections shouldn’t be able to handle.

GOTV is one of the three core missions of Hope Springs from Field PAC. This morning, we had sent out 489 volunteers to knock on doors of voters we identified as supporting Issue 1 or were single-issue abortion voters. They made two passes before completing their shift. As i mentioned before, some of this mornings volunteers signed up for “all day” (which means they are as beat as our organizers are), something we did not encourage.

122 volunteers in Pennsylvania (Allegheny Co.) came out for the morning shift there.

Our Ohio GOTV universe is now 73,608 households, meaning that’s what we knew when we started our morning. In each pass (we have now completed three passes or rounds and are in our fourth and final round of door knocking), we have narrowed this universe. We think we have about 27 thousand households still left on our lists. Really hard to tell, though. Could be more. This morning, we had 489 volunteers chasing down voters who we have identified as Issue 1 supporters who had not voted yet. This afternoon, we counted 242 additional volunteers for our afternoon push. Which is not to say that we had 731 total volunteers. I just don’t know yet what our real final number will be. I haven’t been able to track our Allegheny efforts as closely. Like this morning’s volunteers, this group will be driving door to door and knocking on the doors of voters who have told us they support Issue 1. By now, our drive sheets are looking worn and ragged, voter’s names stricken throughout. Each round has meant preparing new maps for our volunteers since we delete the homes where we are told they have already voted. In most staging locations, organizers printed out instructions on four different colors (light blue, beige, light green and yellow) so that drivers know which computer they should go to for new maps. That way, they can auto-populate new driving instructions. Very clever, these young people. We have been hearing fewer complaints from voters about changes in their polling locations than we did in August. Still, we make sure every canvasser has a precinct locator site up on their phone as part of our training. And to ask every voter they talked to, “Are you sure you know your polling location?” Turnout has been above expectations. In Cuyahoga County, the Board of Elections reports 130,093 voters within the county so far, exceeding the number of early and absentee ballots. Most people are expecting a 60% to 40% split (Election Day turnout to Early Vote). “The Hamilton County Board of Elections is predicting a 40% to 45% turnout overall, compared to an average 33% for odd-year elections.”

The Statehouse News Bureau:

The higher turnout is being led by independent voters. Turnout is up in the 72 counties for which there is publicly available information online. There isn't similar information for the other 16 counties. The number of unaffiliated voters increased by 116,105 over August, which is 81% of the total increase.

A total 27 of our out-of-state volunteers stayed through today (they are not included in the 489 or 242 numbers). A handful will stay on to help with Ballot Curing, if needed. We will continue to remind voters they need to “fix” errors on their absentee ballots until the election is called. Most of us are hoping that it is called tonight.

And we continue our special outreach to New Voters (and not just new voters Hope Springs volunteers registered). We are reminding those who recently registered using a paper form or updated their registration must provide additional identification for the first time this year: either an Ohio driver’s license, ID number or the last four digits of their Social Security number.
