Ghana Tuesday Update With Update About Johnathon [1]

Just a quick update to this diary- Johnathon is back from the hospital with bad news. It deserves its own story and I will try to write it in a day or two. Difficult times.

In a few days I’ll probably have more to report about events with John in Ghana and the people he’s working with than I do today but I’m trying to keep to a schedule of posting an update every Tuesday so I thought I should let everyone know what’s been happening.

This is a photo of Anabel from when she first went into the shelter where she is presently living, by the way. I thought it was a good reminder of how much she has grown, both physically and in self-confidence and self-assurance. At the time this photo was taken she had recently been abandoned by her mother and rescued by my friend John, who took her to the childcare center were she is currently staying. She was crying herself to sleep every night.

I don’t like the fact that she is basically living in an orphanage but at least she is safe and is being well cared for. John and I have been talking about her future but it’s not easy. We don’t want her to wind up worse off with people who may be unkind to her or abuse her in some way. And of course we don’t have any legal power over her to make too many decisions for her. But a child needs a family home.

We have just paid Anabel’s monthly fee. Other than that she seems to be fine and is still attending school every day, on her way to becoming a normal kid, as much as the world will let her.

This past week has been taken up mostly with Favour, the pregnant seventeen year old Nigerian girl. Now that she has had her baby and is home from the hospital they are past the worst but the doctors told John that she needs time to recover from her surgery and so for at least a month she is totally helpless.

We have arranged a room for her and the baby and hired a caretaker for her. The baby needs to be taken back in to the hospital for his circumcision (very important there) and a checkup. So we will see how that goes. But at least they are both home and in reasonable health.

John himself is in fragile health and all of the effort he put into caring for Favour last week affected him badly. He began passing blood again but he seems to have recovered from that. It is a continuing problem with him, and worrisome.

Today’s immediate crisis is Johnathon, one of the Small Killers, a dance group John has been promoting. Johnathon is seventeen years old and the younger brother of Theophilus, the leader of the group. (Theophilus has also been helping John and was with John very day in the hospital. He took most of the photos of John and Favour.)

Johnathon is suffering from what seems to be a serious urinary tract infection. This has been going on for awhile and today he came to John saying that he was unable to urinate. We arranged for him to go to the hospital and are waiting to hear more (sorry if this is too much personal information but illness has no patience with prudes.)

We are continuing to work on the website for our small non-profit, at www.p9foundation.com and hopefully in a day or so we will have links to the GoFundMes for Anabel, Favour, and others. It’s still very basic and very much a work in progress but one step at a time.

We need to check up on baby Vicky and her parents and on little Melbourne. His father is still in prison and his mother is struggling to feed Melbourne and his siblings. We just haven’t had time (or funds) to care for everyone right now. So there is much to do.

Anyway this is this week’s update. Mostly it’s been a good week and we have a new little boy in the world, so that is a good thing.

God bless.
