Tomorrow is Election Day in many places, including my own Massachusetts city. While some people don’t turn out in the “Odd Years”, I know most of us here understand that local, municipal elections are at least if not more important than the Evens. In my city we have elections for Mayor (for the first time, it’s a race between two women and the winner will be our first ELECTED female Mayor), School Board, and City Council. It’s an exciting one, and I’m pleased to count many of the new candidates and incumbents seeking reelection among my friends.
I will not, however, be standing just outside the 150 foot Election Limit line with signs for my friends. I also will not be up late commenting here… because at 4:30 my alarm will go off and I’ll get ready to be at the polling place before 6am. For three years I’ve been a precinct Warden and it’s one of the most rewarding activities I do all year. Helping people vote is so central to our democracy I can’t imagine NOT being there!
If you have an election tomorrow, VOTE. It matters. To encourage you, I want to share a tale of my eldest, still known as K1 here but in reality now a fully adulty quarter century adult. Tomorrow K1 will for the first time cast her ballot NOT in her hometown, but several towns over where she currently resides. I know many people complain “young people don’t vote” etc… but in the past week she’s been working hard to educate herself on the candidates for Mayor, City Council, School Board, etc. So today we had a text exchange that went something like this:
K1: So I looked up who the Mayoral candidates have donated to and found out they both have given to Democratic candidates in the past. [proud mama brag: I did NOT tell K1 how to do this] Me: OK, so they’re both Democratic or D-leaning. K1: Yeah, and that makes it easy to choose the challenger! The current Mayor is hated by the teacher’s union for their response to the recent teacher contract mess, and so even though the challenger is a former cop I guess it’s OK to vote for him since he’s a Democrat. Me: What about the other races? K1: Oh yeah, I googled candidates and found all their info from local paper pieces. I’m pretty set on my votes now, just have to go help my significant other with their voting info since they’re in another town… [time]… hey, is it possible there’s no election in <town name>? I can’t find anything and the city website has nothing except a Primary in 2023.
The kids they’re gonna be OK, everyone. Even if I can’t get 18yo K2 to vote tomorrow, we’ll try to lure him in next March for the Presidential primary, and where I’ll be on the ballot as a member of my Democratic Ward Committee :).
OK, it’s on to the Tops for all of you, and I’m headed off to sleep very soon!!
