This week, we’re helping a Dallas-area preschool class get some math games, and a Nebraska elementary class get Snap Circuits kits to help them understand electricity. We hope that readers who support quality public school education will help by sharing or supporting our featured projects.
The Inoculation Project is an ongoing, volunteer effort to crowdfund science, math, and literacy projects for public schools in low-income neighborhoods. As always, our conduit is DonorsChoose, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation that facilitates tax-deductible donations to specific, vetted projects in public schools.
Here’s our new Project #1 for the week: Ms. Timms teaches pre-K in a city just south of Dallas, and needs some supplies, particularly math “file folder games”.
PROJECT #1 Project: PreK Back to School Resources: Help me give my students the Beginning Operations folder games. This will help develop beginning math skills. Economic need: An Equity Focus School; nearly all students from low‑income households. Location: Rolling Hills Elementary School, Lancaster, Texas Total: $172.58 Still Needed: $ 110.08 $61.55 Project description by Ms. Timms: These items will make a difference in the way my students learn and grow. Children need a clean environment to learn, and the Clorox Wipes will keep our classroom fresh and clean. The other learning materials namely, the beginning sounds puzzle will help develop phonemic awareness which will help my students gain a good start to learning how to read. The dry erase markers will let my students explore and begin to write their names, alphabets, numbers, and journal writing. We will create creative art projects using glue sticks. Giving our students a head start in their learning is very important. And using simple addition and subtraction games will prepare my PreK class for kindergarten. My school is a social economic disadvantaged school. Title1. Our students really need these items. Our children are happy, funny, smart, and eager to learn. We just need help in getting them the items they need. DONATE HERE Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference! For those, like me, lacking an elementary ed background, this teacher shows us what is meant by “file folder games”. x x YouTube Video
We made excellent progress on this long-term project in the last two weeks! A good thing too, because as so often happens, the matching grant has run out, so we will push this along, and perhaps get some help from other donors. Mr. Sutherland teaches at an elementary school in a mid-Nebraska city. He’s hoping some Snap Circuit boards will help his class understand science concepts better.
PROJECT #2 Project: Snap Your Way to Success! Resources: Help me give my students Snap Circuit boards to expand their knowledge of light and sound. Economic need: An Equity Focus School; nearly all students from low‑income households. Location: West Lawn Elementary School, Grand Island, Nebraska Total: $945.64 Still Needed: $ 454.16 $393.87 Project description by Mr. Sutherland: Help me give my students Snap Circuit boards to expand their knowledge of light and sound. We have an awesome reading curriculum that has a unit on light and sound. It does a great job of describing how each works. I want to take it a step further and allow my students to experiment and see firsthand how electricity can benefit us. I was fortunate enough to use these when I was in elementary and they absolutely helped me retain what I had learned. My students and I would greatly appreciate any help. DONATE HERE Donations of ANY size can make a BIG difference! This is a more advanced Snap Circuits kit than those requested (which we saw last week), with some cool experiments about sound. x x YouTube Video
Our main project from last week was completed, pushed most of the way by us and the matching funds! Project #1, Stem Games, Materials, and Resources Oh, My: Mrs. Tillman needed resources to teach science to kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd-grade students in Baton Rouge. She has not yet seen that the project is completed, so we’ll go back for her note next week, but for now, here is an interim note she wrote for some of our donations last Sunday: On behalf of my students and I, we would like to thank you for supporting our class project. I know this project will help to provide more interactive, effective lessons and learning for my energetic Kindergarten - 2nd grade students. Thanks again for supporting our class! Similarly, last week we had a completed project whose teacher had not yet gotten notice, so here is her note today! Books a Million: in Need of Sprucing Up My Classroom: Ms. Guillory teaches third grade in a small city just north of Lake Pontchartrain in Louisiana. She is in serious need of some new books that will appeal to her students. She writes: Thank you so much for funding my classroom. This means the absolute world to me. The students are going to enjoy all of the resources that are being provided for our classroom. I will make sure that every book is taken care of by each and every student that comes across them.
DonorsChoose has developed the designation Equity Focus Schools to describe some schools that submit projects. They meet two criteria: at least 50% of students are Black, Latinx, Native American, Pacific Islander, or multiracial, and at least 50% of students qualify for free or reduced price lunch, the standard measure for school economic need. You can read more at the link about their efforts to address the longstanding inequity in education.
Founded in 2009, The Inoculation Project seeks to fund science, math, and literacy projects in public school classrooms and libraries. Our conduit is DonorsChoose, a crowdfunding charity founded in 2000 and highly rated by both Charity Navigator and the Better Business Bureau.
Every Sunday, we focus on helping to fund projects in neighborhood public schools where the overwhelming majority of students come from low-income households. We welcome everyone who supports public school education — no money is required!
Finally, here’s our list of successfully funded projects — our series total is 1060! The success-list diary also contains links and additional information about DonorsChoose.
