Quick Sunday Report on Hope Springs GOTV in Ohio [1]

['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

Date: 2023-11-05

This morning, our GOTV universe is 92,936 households . This includes everything: voters who have told us over the last month they support Issue 1, voters who have told us over the last two years they were Abortion single voters, etc. Any voter that Hope Springs from Field PAC had indications they would vote to support changing the constitution. People who have voted have been removed and we are hoping that VAN reports a big drop in this number before we cut turf for Tuesday.

763,440 Ohioans have voted early . This is 184,479 more early votes than we had at this point in August. Our volunteer numbers are impressive — but that also means that we are identifying supporters for Issue 1 at a rate greater than our ability to incorporate them into our GOTV plan. So all we can do is try. We have no idea, yet, what to expect on Election Day. What we know is that our GOTV plan gives us the best chance for victory. And victory we shall have.

Today is our third day of GOTV Week in Ohio and the Pittsburgh area . This is what we know so far (meaning, numbers are not final).

Yesterday, 2,874 volunteers came out to knock on doors. They took out turf equal to more than 200,000 doors. Thankfully, most of them were using mini-VAN, which imports the data directly into the database. Organizer and volunteers are working to get all that data in so that we know everyone we need to include in our Election Day GOTV universe.

Today, we expect at least another 500 volunteers to come out to knock on doors on a Sunday. Today’s canvass was a little different. We were really pushing the last opportunity to vote early and we did have voters who took advantage of that. This means that we have drivers who will take voters we identify at their door who is willing to go vote right then to take them to the BoE office. We actually did this yesterday and volunteers drove at least 80 voters to go vote.

Yesterday i focused on our stud volunteers from other states but we are also getting note-worthy assistance from organizers in other states who are helping to cut turf for our walks in Ohio. I think every one of the states where we canvassed this Summer has helped out here — and is greatly appreciated! This really has been an all-out effort.

23 African-American volunteers, including 12 up from Georgia, spoke at Black Churches this morning to urge people to vote, and especially to vote early today. Several spoke to multiple churches. Our Georgia-based volunteers who went through the 2021 Senate Run-offs and the 2022 Warnock re-elect are very popular (much-requested) speakers at these churches.

County boards of election were open today until 5 p.m. Anyone who was in line by 5 is supposed to be able to cast their ballot. We do have at least one driver at each staging location ready to drive anyone to the Early Voting centers if needed. This will be repeated on Tuesday.

Tomorrow we have 459 volunteers signed up for our last GOTV lit drop (so far). Monday night's lit drop occurs not only to remind voters to go vote Tuesday, but also to ID houses where no one has picked up the lit we had left previously. During the day on Monday, organizers will cut drivable turf for Monday night and Tuesday's 3 rounds of Running Down the Vote. Most of our out-of-state volunteers will be staying as well (they are not included in the 459 number).

On Tuesday, volunteers will be driving from house to house of known supporters for Issue 1, knocking on doors and asking if they have voted yet. We will endeavor to knock non-voter’s doors three times, unless they have already voted. Those who report they have will be struck from the list. There are two shifts on Monday, those who will run down voters from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and those who signed up for the 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. shift. We have discouraged people from signing up for both shifts, but some have. It’ll be a very long day!

We will be doing Ballot Curing until the vote is called. We have been doing test runs of this for 2 weeks and we feel really prepared for the next week!

And we continue our special outreach to New Voters (and not just new voters Hope Springs volunteers registered). We are reminding those who recently registered using a paper form or updated their registration must provide additional identification for the first time this year: either an Ohio driver’s license, ID number or the last four digits of their Social Security number. We continue to duplicate this approach in Allegheny county suburbs, as well. Dozens of Pittsburgh area volunteers went to Ohio both in the Summer and the last couple of weeks, and they are leading efforts to turn out Democrats for the important judicial and county executive elections. 368 volunteers showed up yesterday to canvass in Allegheny and another 177 are signed up for today. While we don’t have an ID’ed GOTV universe, we have Abortion single issue voters in the county, strong Democrats and those who have identified themselves as likely to support these tickets through our Issues Canvassing. While the tactics are well-worn they need to be resurrected because new volunteers (and leaders) come to the fore given the way that Democrats are organized. We aren’t good about institutional memory and this is a key reason that Hope Springs from Field is determined to help volunteers understand the reasoning and purpose behind the things we do.

We are asking for your help here. Our primary expenses for this grassroots-driving effort is VAN (the voter file Democrats use) and literature, Having to have printed a hundred thousand pieces of GOTV lit has really busted our budget! Expanding our efforts — hitting more doors — means we have to pay more for VAN. We also need to provide clipboards for our volunteers, since we use the Issues Survey as a guide and we like volunteers to show voters the survey, as well as have something for voters to support Constituent Service Request forms when they fill out one.

If you are able to donate to our efforts to support Issue 1, identify abortion rights supporters, protect our voters, especially in minority communities, expand the electorate, please help:
