Welcome to the Street Prophets Coffee Hour, the place where politics meets up with religion, science, art, nature, and life. Come in, have a cuppa and a cookie (or three!) and join us. Street Prophets is an open thread. All topics are welcome.
Yesterday my grandson turned 20, much to my surprise. A number of years ago, I filled a drawer in his dresser with many, many pairs of wool socks, both warm and decorative. They don’t wear out in Texas, naturally, where it may get cold but it doesn’t stay cold. So now those socks have migrated to my daughter’s dresser and, when added to the more than two dozen she already had, they are absolutely stuffed in.
So now I’m faced with replacing the socks, both so his feet will be warm and so he will have things made for him by his nani (the Urdu word for one’s maternal grandmother), things I hope he can wear for many years yet. But what to make?
I wrote my own patterns all those years ago but I lost them in a computer failure. You’d think, after making several hundred pairs, I’d be able to do it automatically anyway, but not exactly. It’s been a few years, after all. I’ve pretty much rewritten the pattern for basic crew socks, and I’ve made three pairs in the last couple of weeks. (In olden days, I would make a sock a day, but now my writing is placing huge demands on my time. I published a second book in September and I’m trying to finish one or maybe two sometime this winter.) But I really, truly want to make more of the fancier patterns, so I’m having to enlarge pictures and count stitches to make charts.
This is the basic crew sock I make by the hundreds. This one is for me, but they’re all the same, only the color changes.
These were some of his faves, so I’m starting here:
He liked these so much he wore them on warm days, with shorts.
Anyone else have do-overs? I’m also open to new designs. This computer is getting a bit unreliable, too, but I’ve done a better job of backing up now, so I hope I won’t have to re-invent things a third time.
The thread is now open.
