Publisher sues Meadows [1]

There are, of course, scummy lawsuits. For example, there are the strategic lawsuits against public interest (SLAPP) whose sole purpose is to silence someone for speaking out on matters of public interest by engaging them in costly and lengthy litigation. A close cousin is the intimidatory lawsuit such as the one Trump brought against Michael Cohen for half a billion dollars for something or the other; Trump dropped the lawsuit when Cohen gleefully engaged with him and insisted that Trump be deposed. There are also frivolous lawsuits, some of which are scummy-aspirant such as the hilarious one Trump brought against Clinton and which a judge threw out after ordering Trump and his lawyer pay a million dollars for wasting the Court’s time.

And then there are the weird lawsuits. Even among these, a real headscratcher is the one that Meadows’s publisher, All Seasons Press, brought against him.

All Seasons Press alleges that “one of the primary theses of [Meadows’s] book is that President Trump was the true winner of the 2020 Presidential Election and that the election was stolen by President Biden through widespread election fraud.” From the Independent’s reporting:

“Chapter Fifteen of the Book entitled ‘The Long Con’ begins with this sentence: ‘I KNEW HE DIDN’T LOSE’ … and chronicles how the [2020] Presidential Election was ‘stolen’ from former President Trump and ‘rigged’ with the help from ‘allies in the liberal media,’ who ignored ‘actual evidence of fraud, right there in plain sight for anyone to access and analyze’. “Meadows concludes: ‘In time, it became clear that the media’s plan ‘the long con’ had worked.” The publisher also notes that Mr. Meadows blames the media for Mr. Trump’s loss. “It was one thing for them to rig the election and get away with it, but even for them, bragging about the theft would be a bridge too far,” he wrote.

The book, The Chief’s Chief, was published in 2021. After some initial lackluster sales, public interest in the book “precipitously declined” recently. The reason? According to All Seasons, the blame for this contretemps can be attributed to statements made by Meadows to the Special Prosecutor as well as the reports that his grand jury testimony “squarely contradicts the central theme of the Book, which is that President Trump was the true winner of the 2020 Election.” All Seasons alleges that Meadows has testified that Mr. Trump had been “dishonest” when he claimed victory on election night 2020. To top it all, Meadows is now admitting that Mr. Trump lost the 2020 election, and that he [Meadows] himself hadn’t seen any fraud that would change the result.

In other words, All Seasons has only now woken up to realize that Meadows had lied to them all along about the book’s central theme of the election being stolen. And for this grievous mendaciousness of Meadows they want to be paid back their advance of $350,000 given to him in good faith and $600,000 in out-of-pocket damages, not to mention “at least $1M for the damage done to their reputation.”

What would be a just outcome for this bizarre lawsuit? On the one hand, Meadows being taken to the cleaners is not entirely unpleasant, and on the other All Seasons being told to fuck off and not try to profit from bullshit publications is also equally appealing. (Incidentally, although it would have made for a better story, All Seasons is not related to the Four Seasons immortalized by dye-oozing Rudy.)
