In WAYR?, I note what I’m reading and comment...you note what you are reading and comment. Occasionally, I may add a section or a link related to books…

I am finished reading:

The Lost Subways of North America: A Cartographic Guide to the Past, Present, and What Might Have Been. Written and illustrated by Jake Berman - This is a delightful book for laymen and transportation geeks alike. (I know that DK has more than a few transportation geeks.) Lost Subways is the story of the failures and successes of 20 American and 3 Canadian cities that acquired (or didn’t) rapid transit systems. I especially enjoyed how rivalries between cities (e.g. Houston vs. New Orleans, Montreal vs. Toronto, New York vs. London) played a role in rapid transit development. Loved some of the insider stories and political drama. Great (though flawed) visualization of the train lines as the existed at certain points in time

Lost Subways could be a little stronger in a couple of aspects (which I will cover in my overall review) but this is a great coffee-table book. Also, color me shocked that Rochester, New York even had a subway system for awhile. The wildest story of a rapid transit system in this book is Minneapolis.

Liked the diversion, glad to get back to the reading I put on hold.

Ideally, mass transit should do four things. One, it should be frequent; two, it should be fast; three, it should be reliable; and four, it should go where people want to go.

I am reading:

Wild Seed by Octavia Butler
