Just one more short update on the original story I wrote here

www.dailykos.com/…

Favour is a homeless 17 year old Nigerian girl living in Accra, Ghana. She was nine months pregnant with no money for food and no place to stay. The father of the child had abandoned her. She came to my friend John asking for help and he arranged for a temporary place for her to stay. When the time came for her to give birth John took her to the hospital and made sure that she received the care she and the newborn baby boy needed.

Favour has no health insurance and the hospital bill was high. I admit I was unable to handle such a sudden emergency and I was forced to ask for help, something I have been doing everything possible not to do. But this time there was no alternative. The people here came through in a major way and the hospital bills were paid. I am deeply grateful for the generosity of everyone who helped.

As it turned out Favour needed two surgeries and the baby had jaundice so he was kept in the hospital for almost a week on an incubator. Thank God for those donations! Otherwise this would have been a disaster and possibly life-threatening.

At any rate, finally after all this struggle the hospital called John this morning and told him to come and get the mother and baby. John himself is ill. Because all of the effort he put in this week he is passing blood again and is very weak, but he pulled himself together and went to the hospital to sign the papers to get Favour released.

John took the mother and child to their room on the beach, where they are now resting comfortably.

The doctors said that Favour cannot do any work for a month or so while her surgery heals (and she has no job anyway) so he has arranged for a young woman to care for her for thirty dollars a month. Favour is very headstrong and I’m not sure she will be willing to take it easy for that long but we will see.

I don’t mean to flood this site with stories about this one girl and her baby but I thought everyone would want to know that they are finally home and safe. Of course they will still need care but at least they are home.
