This is an update on the situation in Avdiivka from Ukrainian journalist Yuriy Butusov.

x 🗞️Ukrainian reporter Yuriy Butusov says Russians crossed the railway north of Avdiivka and situation was critical at some point today. Ukrainian Army reportedly didn't built any fortifications north of the town, which complicates the situation. #UkraineRussiaWar pic.twitter.com/5MzaiRhiLy — MilitaryLand.net (@Militarylandnet) November 2, 2023

Today, Russian troops crossed the railway line near the village of Stepove and began assault operations near the village itself, north of Avdiyivka. Russian infantry has entrenched behind the railway, is accumulating to expand the bridgehead and to attack the Avdiivka Coke Plant - a key complex of structures that controls the approaches to Avdiivka. The capture of the plant will mean a gradual but inevitable build-up of defenses and capture of the city. Suddenly, it turned out that during the war in Avdiivka, no leader had built a rear line of defense, and it was necessary to dig in now, there were no ready positions. Russian assaults continue south of Avdiivka, where they are expanding the breakthrough in the area of the sand pit near the village of Opytne, which is the second direction of coverage of Avdiivka. Here the threat also increases. Ukrainian troops are having success in combat operations directly in the city of Avdiyivka. The 110th mechanized brigade skillfully repelled all Russian attacks, completely restored several positions that the enemy captured during massive assaults on October 10-19, and even improved its positions in some directions. There is currently no threat of the enemy entering the city. Why is Avdiyivka a tactical trap for the Russians? Now many will remember the scenario of the loss of Severodonetsk, Lysychansk, Soledar and Bakhmut. But the situation in Avdiivka is tactically different. First, the 110th mechanized brigade demonstrates exceptional combat capability and reliably holds the city, preventing the enemy from getting a hold of the city's buildings. The enemy is advancing north and south of the brigade's positions. Secondly, our troops have much more advantageous positions in terms of tactics, and they hold the flanks of the breakthrough well. Russian troops advance north of Avdiivka along a narrow corridor in the lowlands up to 4 km wide. From this corridor, they are trying to cut our supply routes to the 8 km wide Avdiivka. Most of the enemy's rotations and reserves will be damaged during the advance, as the Ukrainian troops reliably hold the flanks and control the commanding heights with convenient firing sectors. The Russian infantry is suffering significant losses, and it is much more difficult for the enemy to conduct an offensive and hold positions than it is for us to defend. Thirdly, if we stabilize the defense north of Avdiivka, then even in positional defense, Russian troops will suffer losses many times higher than ours. The situation near Avdiivka carries much more risks for the Russian troops than for us. Fourth, the Russian troops do not have a large numerical advantage, the Ukrainians have a

significant number of people and equipment. Fifth, the Russians attack exclusively with infantry without armored vehicles, since our troops effectively destroy the equipment. The enemy is vulnerable.

This is an interesting interview with a Ukrainian commander about the realities of putting together and managing army units. It’s long but good.

x "Some soldiers lack discipline. Yet former deserters can transform into top performers when given second chances to prove themselves." He remains hopeful as intense demands strengthen skills and forge leaders. — Euromaidan Press (@EuromaidanPress) November 2, 2023

Here are a couple of excerpts:

There is a difference between various Russian units. These variations can be detected on a drone video showing who is moving into which positions – are they experienced VDV (airborne) troops or recently mobilized units? “If mobilized infantry troops are approaching, they walk in groups, confused, looking around, hiding behind trees. But when the Russian paratroopers come in, it’s ‘Go for it!’ With backpacks, they walk 50 meters, then another 50 meters, keeping a huge distance between them. They stretch out. No one would shoot at them [from artillery or mortar] like that. They are such wolves, you know. Then again, you can identify the type of fighter simply by their manner of walking.” …. Ukrainian soldiers differ by levels of motivation and skill. The main task of the commander is to make them work together efficiently. “I have a medic, for example. He’s a tattoo maker – covered entirely in skulls. It’s so scary that even I’m scared,” says Andriy smiling.” “I turn, he’s already sitting. I turn again, he’s already lying down. You tell him to stand, he stands. You tell him to bring something, he brings what you said but nothing more and sits down again.” In a word, he is not the best of the fighters. On the other hand, there are fighters who commit 150%, including the deputy commander of Andriy’s company who works “like an enterprise.” While the deputy deals with all the paperwork, which is “a freight-full of bureaucracy,” Andriy can dedicate his time to working with soldiers and planning tactics. Some soldiers from the so-called former “battalion of deserters” were also added to Andriy’s company and, to his surprise, became good fighters. This deserters’ battalion was dissolved early in the war after their commander ordered frontal attacks without proper reconnaissance, which led to many fatalities and soldiers fleeing the battle. The commander was removed, the battalion reorganized, and many of the soldiers were added to other units where they performed well.

ATACMS were put to good use in Crimea, according to this interview.

In his interview with The Economist published on 1 November, Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief, General Valery Zaluzhnyi said Ukraine had struck Russian-occupied Crimea with American-supplied long-range ATACMS missiles for the first time on 30 October. On that day, the base of a Russian air defense regiment in Olenivka on Cape Tarkhankut had reportedly been hit, and there were also explosions and smoke reported in Sevastopol, Liga says. Over the past months, Ukraine intensified air and sea attacks on the Crimean peninsula, annexed by Russia back in 2014, employing air- and sea-based explosive drones and long-range missiles. General Zaluzhnyi believes Crimea remains Putin’s greatest vulnerability and the linchpin of Russia’s imperial restoration project, and Putin’s legitimacy rests on having brought Crimea “back to Russia.”

In Ukraine children must learn about surviving shelling. In the U.S. they must learn to survive active shooters. Neither should be necessary.
