Rick Snyder whines about civility as he escapes accountability for Flint genocide [1]

With all eyes on prolific criminal Donald Trump facing long overdue accountability for one of his many crimes and frauds, it’s easy to lose track of other Republican villains. Like for example Gov. Rick Snyder (R-Michigan, 2011 — 2018), whose complete disregard for black lives led to the poisoning of Flint water.
Attorney General Bill Schuette (R-Michigan, 2011 — 2018) had started to build a case against Snyder years ago, but later Attorney General Dana Nessel threw that work out and restarted from scratch. Watching the news on TV, one might come away with the impression that Nessel was capricious in throwing out her predecessor’s work.
But Nessel was right to be suspicious of Schuette’s motivation. Did Schuette build the case with a fatal flaw so as to help a fellow Republican? Or did Schuette sincerely intend to prosecute Snyder to serve his own gubernatorial ambition?
That was enough for Snyder to complain the investigation into his negligence was politically motivated. Never mind that people died because of decisions he made.
According to Snyder, “the only way to end political persecutions would require electing attorney generals and prosecutors who believe in facts, have a moral compass, and act with civility.” That is utter nonsense, unless maybe “moral compass” and “civility” are euphemisms for letting Snyder off the hook for his crimes against humanity.
Unfortunately, the case was a long shot pretty much regardless. The laws are written with the presumption that elected officials make decisions based on the sincere belief that they’re doing what’s best for their constituents.
It was a reasonable presumption for Republicans as recently as the time of Gov. George Romney (1963 — 1969). But these days, the Republican Party is about nothing other than exploiting racism and xenophobia in the service of making sure the pathologically wealthy pay as little in taxes as possible.
Snyder took a salary of $1 annually, just as he promised in 2010. We got what we paid for. We should’ve splurged on a governor who cares about people.
