Help Ukrainians Learn English [1]

I recently learned about a wonderful opportunity to help young Ukrainians (9 to 35 yrs old) learn or strengthen their English skills. It’s called ENGin, and involves pairing up volunteers with Ukrainian learners for weekly one-hour chats.

(Although many Ukrainians study English in school, it is a formal grammar-driven approach, with little practice at actually speaking English. As a result, Ukraine is near the bottom of the list of European countries in terms of facility with English.)

After a short interview and two one-hour training sessions, I was paired up with three fascinating young (30-ish) women, at intermediate/advanced English levels.

But they need volunteers! This is from yesterday’s biweekly newsletter:

Today, before we share our usual announcements and opportunities, we'd like to acknowledge the pain and fear we at ENGin feel at the prospect of Congress cutting funding to Ukraine. For Ukrainians, this isn't a political issue - it's a question of life and death. We hope that freedom, democracy, and truth will prevail and Ukraine will receive the support it needs to defend itself - to make the future all of us at ENGin are working for possible. There is another challenge we are currently facing internally. For the first time ever, we've had to pause student enrollment due to a shortfall in volunteers. There are over 400 eager students on our waiting list. ... Please spread the word about ENGin's volunteer opportunity within your circle. If you can, please consider taking on an additional buddy.
