“...[S]afety can only come from justice, equality, and freedom for all,” said Rabbi May Ye, according to an Oct. 27, 2023 piece by Brett Wilkins in Commondreams.org. The article reported on the Jewish protest in Grand Central Station, New York City, calling for peace in Gaza.

As the bumper sticker says: ALL lives do indeed matter, including Black ones and Palestinian ones.

I find it truly distressing that the United States vetoed resolutions for a ceasefire in the UN Security Council. I know they justify it by saying that Israel needs to defend itself. However, the true irony is that Israel itself was funding Hamas to prevent a two-state solution. Israel thought it could control the situation through “mowing the lawn,” as PM Netanyahu termed it.

My criticism here is entirely of Israel’s own behavior with regard to the Palestinians. I do NOT believe that criticism on Israel is anti-Semitic, which is ironic as Palestinians are just as Semitic as the Jewish population is.

[In no way should this be construed that I support Hamas’ action, which I heartily condemn.]

I do believe that this awful situation cannot be solved on the battle field. But Israel itself is NOT willing to accord its Palestinian citizens equal status with Jewish ones. So I do believe that Palestinians also have a right to a homeland. As much as the Jews do.

In this case Israel holds the power...just as the Germans were in the 1930’s.

And yes, in a previous diary I used a lot of language reminiscent of Jewish accusations against Nazi Germans. But I do believe that hearing the speech of some of the West Bank settlers, who have illegally appropriated Palestinian land, treat the Palestinians in just as horrific a manner as the Nazis did the Jews in the 1930’s and‘40’s.

I used that language to underscore that parallel.
