Am I the Only One Who Has Noticed the Signs? [1]

I have noticed something interesting about the political signs in the republican town in the democratic state I live in. I cannot tell what party they represent. The traditional red/blue split has morphed into a red/white/blue hodgepodge with some stars that seem to represent neither party but instead nod to America and the flag. Of course, there are still the ridiculous, and always large, banners that proclaim republicans support education and the elderly, and the one I saw yesterday that said republicans hold criminals accountable, (Has someone lost all sense of irony?) but in general I can’t tell what party is represented. Maybe because the state is democratic or maybe the red associated with trump is too much? I am not sure, but if the only thing on your local sign says, “Put kids first”, I will need to wait until Election Day to figure out which party you support, because our local paper certainly won’t cover your platform.

This issue brings into focus a few others related to politics at the local level. One, the lack of local political coverage, has been noted on a number of other diaries and social media posts. The other, political advertising, which seems to be something not discussed enough. I do not support businesses that have political signage. I tend to not interact with my neighbors who have political signage. One can assume where my beliefs tend to lean based on the site I am writing for, but do businesses not care about losing customers anymore? I have wanted to write a letter to the local paper discussing these same issues, but figured it would be a waste. If your political views alienate your customer base, liberal or conservative, wouldn’t you want to make as much money as possible? It seems to me that in the past I had no idea where local businesses stood politically unless I spoke to the owners. Now they hang up banners along the highway. Anyway, I wonder if they have made the connection or if political parties are trying to keep the signs generic looking on purpose, or maybe the red of maga has finally lost it cache?
