Lake Mead and GoP Shutdown - Today, Twice [1]

I routinely drive between my friends’ home in North Las Vegas near Lake Mead Blvd and my own home near Lake Mead Pkwy in Henderson. The direct route is to take the I-515/US93/US95 which is the diagonal route between the two.
The interesting part is that Lake Mead Blvd in NLV goes eastward into to Lake Mead Recreational Park, curves southward, turns back west and becomes Lake Mead Parkway in Henderson. Under ideal traffic circumstances on the Freeway, this scenic route would take 15 to 20 minutes longer than the highway. I have taken the scenic route many times during rush hour traffic and only lose 5 to 10 minutes. Is there a catch? Yes, unless you have a “Senior” US Park Pass, It would cost you $5.
Today, due to MAJOR ongoing construction on the I-515, I decided to take the back road to Henderson. After weeks of substantial delays back and forth on the 515, I decided to take the back way. The road less traveled.
What a great drive!!! One doesn’t have to be a geologist like ‘moi’ to appreciate the fabulous transition from the Paleozoic rocks of Frenchman Mtn to the awesome display of MUCH younger basin sediments of the Muddy Creek Formation. May be a geologist wet dream, but really cool for anyone else.
So on my way back south, I asked the Park Ranger at the entrance about the pending closure. She told me she wouldn’t be there because only “Essential” personnel would be on duty. I thanked her and told her I thought she was “essential”.
I realized that I didn’t resolve the critical question of whether it would be possible to pass thru the park gates on shutdown. On the way back, I specifically asked the gatekeeper if it would be possible to pass thru the park on govt shutdown. He, an elderly park employee, told me he did not know. He said that in past shutdowns it went both ways. Blockaded vs no employees on duty. Also told him he was “essential”.
At any rate, If you are near Las Vegas, at the very least take a few extra minutes to check out that loop. And, If you want to actually see the lake, take a short drive along the North Shore Road.
