Run It Up the Political Poll and See If Anyone Salutes || Comment [1]

Popularized in the 1950s, the phrase “run it up the flagpole and see if anyone salutes ” has become a way of making fun of farfetched ideas in and out of politics. An example would be asking your boss for a two-day workweek with six months of paid vacation or having participants of a coup hold an impeachment inquiry. As my wont to do Sunday mornings, I made a cup of tea, boiled water for my oatmeal and blueberries, and settled on ABC for my Sunday morning political fair. Shortly into the program This Week Sunday, I simmered along with my peppermint tea. I came to a boil with my oatmeal when alternate co-host Martha Raddatz introduced a widely panned poll with findings that President Biden was trailing Donald Trump by as little as seven and as much as 10 points in a Washington Post-ABC poll.
Glossing over the fact that pollsters called it an outlier, Raddatz, a respected and longtime correspondent, poked significant holes in her credibility, stating, “Whatever caveats, whether that is an outlier, that’s a tough one to spin.” Donna Brazile, the former National Democratic Committee Chairwoman, dissented in the ensuing panel discussion. Martha Raddatz retorted, “They [pollsters] are talking to the American people…” Brazile also said she did not believe ‘Democrats should be sitting in a panic room.’ Seventeen days before the 2012 election, ABC News touted a poll that gave Mitt Romney a national lead of 6 points while conceding that Mr. Obama held the electoral college vote lead. The gist of their story was having an electoral college winner different from the popular vote winner would result in nationwide turmoil.

Had polls been correct, President Joe Biden would be a lock to be impeached and convicted had the predicted red wave come true. Public opinion is as volatile as a kitchen grease fire; using the wrong method to extinguish it could burn down your home.
In the zeal to make everything and everyone normal for ratings, the media has made insults, boorish behavior, and criminality acceptable because pollsters are talking to the American people. We should all remember a court agreed that listening to Tucker Carlson for news is equivalent to a fool’s errand. Carlson is, first and foremost, not a provider of “the news” as we know it, or “facts,” said federal judge Mary Kay Vyskocil in 2020. The former host, Chuck Todd, of another Sunday Morning politics show, Meet the Press, thought truth is a disputable purview of news. Todd said that Republicans “have successfully messaged against it [Obamacare],” but he disagrees with those who argue that the media should educate the public on the law. According to Todd, that’s President Barack Obama’s job.” If one were to extrapolate from Todd’s logic, the media should not dispute Trump’s assertion of a rigged election, just Democrats.
One hopes before the media fawns over ratings like former CBS CEO and Chairman Les Moonves, who said, “It may not be good for America, but it’s damn good for CBS,” they remember the former President is threatening the media with treason and saying the soon-to-be former Joints Chiefs Chairman General Mark Milley is worthy of execution. So before the country is subjected to Trump’s tired rhetoric, nicknames, and the bastardization of history, be warned. Unlike the media trying to convince us that Mr. Biden should be afraid, we need to fear morning news shows taking calls from a two-time impeached, 91-count indicted pseudo-mob boss who wants to be President again.
