The Naval Destroyer Museum in Bremerton, Washington features the U.S.S. Turner Joy Museum Ship. The Turner Joy was commissioned in 1959 and decommissioned in 1982. According to the Museum:
“The Turner Joy is a Destroyer, a warship known for its speed and guns! Destroyers were known as ‘Greyhounds of the sea’ and also as ‘Tin Cans’ due to their lightweight construction.”
The bridge, shown in the photographs below, is the room where the ship can be commanded.
Shown above is the view from the bridge.
Shown above is the intercom or squawk box which allows communication with other workstations.
Shown above is the surface search radar which is used to search for other ships and small craft.
Speed is ordered on the bridge, but speed changes are made manually in the engine rooms. The Conning Officer will order a speed range—ahead 1/3, 2/3, Standard, Full, or Flank—and then order the specific desired speed in revolutions per minute.
The ship’s course is controlled by the helm or steering wheel. The helm unit includes gages that show the angle of the rudder and a gyrocompass repeater.
Shown above is the Captain’s Sea Cabin. This is where the Commanding Officer, or Captain, sleeps when the ship is underway at sea.
