Don't pause on a railroad track. Do wear seat belts - even if you don't need them. [1]

Scripps caption for this picture reads: “Family members were in an SUV hit by a freight train, causing the car to flip multiple times and violently eject them from the vehicle.”
My question is whether the occupants of the van were wearing seat belts. Granted, the impact of a train may well have killed everyone anyway. But I can’t help but wonder.
I bring up this question because of an incident in my family. In November of 2006, by brother was driving in the mountains of northern Idaho. Pete only wore a seat belt “when he neHeded one.” Like when it was snowing, or he was going to drive real fast. He didn’t need a seat belt on that day (I can not think of a single day when he did). The pavement was wet, and as he ascended, the temperature dropped. He hit a patch of black ice, slide off the road and went down an 80 foot, 75 degree embankment. His truck rolled. Pete was thrown from the vehicle.
The truck then rolled over Pete. I spent 10 days in an ICU with my brother in a coma. I therefore feel obliged to point out that being in a car without fastening your seat belt is a bad idea. I can’t help but wonder if that family had been wearing safety belts if maybe a couple of them might have survived.
Oh yes, and I would also like to point out that it is a bad idea to stop or pause on railroad tracks. Those people did not deserve what happened to them. We all make mistakes. But luck does favor the well-prepared.
