Some time ago, I found a link to github (this one) which allows you to list what states you’ve been to in the U. S., and your level of involvement in each of those states. You get a certain number of points for each. The classification system is on the right. The intended definitions are not clear, so I’ve made my own.
Lived here: Spent at least a month and used a postal address in the state.
Stayed here: Spent at least one night in the state, even if i was just passing through.
Visited here: Did not spend the night, but came to the state as a tourist or to experience an event.
Stopped here: Did not spend the night, but stopped in the state for some reason, even if it was just to pee.
Passed here: drove through without stopping.
The last two classifications are pretty much self-evident.
So, using these definitions, here’s my map:
I was born in Maryland, and lived there until I was through with college. I then went to graduate school in New York. After graduate school came the struggle to find a tenure-track faculty position, which took several years; in the meantime, I took temporary positions that ended up being geographically dispersed (New York, California, Virginia, Maryland, and New Jersey. Finally, I landed a tenure-track position in Pennsylvania, and we lived there for 20 years. Now we’ve retired to California.
Of the states in red (lived there), I lived in all of them for at least a year, with the exception of Indiana, where I spent 6 months on sabbatical. I have license plates from all of these states except Indiana.
It’s too bad there isn’t a way to distinguish the states where I’ve just stayed the night while just passing through versus staying there for a purpose. Those where I went for a purpose include Washington, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, Minnesota, Missouri, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Kentucky, Illinois, Ohio, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Maine.
The only state where I haven’t been that I designated as one I’d like to visit on this map is Hawaii, but I suppose, at some point, I’d like to visit Yellowstone (Wyoming), and Glacier National Park (Montana). I suppose I could imagine visiting Alaska also. Had there been no pandemic, I would have attended Netroots Nation in Milwaukie, Wisconsin in 2020. Maybe some other event will take me there.
You might give this item a try to see how many points you rack up.
