Poem For World Rivers Day: The Snake River [1]

I once snagged a fish
On the Snake River
My hook fastening on its side
As it swam by –
This is not an honorable way
To catch a trout
Though its flesh was crispy sweet
When grilled in a campfire pan
That night.
The Snake River is a windy one,
Looking from above
Like a giant rattler swishing
Side to side
Through rugged terrain,
And the Snake's water at dawn
Is so cold sometimes
It feels like fangs are biting
Your ankles,
But the real question to ask
Is are the fish biting?
There is a spot along the Snake
Where the pines come close
To either bank,
But leave enough breathing space
For easy walking
And with room to cast your rod –
And the only things that exist
Are you, the river and the trees
And the distant Teton Mountains
Which look like shards of purple, blue glass
Stabbing the sky,
Still drizzled
With the thick white frosting
Of winter snow –
Which reminds me
Of the fresh baked cinnamon rolls
And their sugary icing
I had with my coffee at a café
Two days ago.
Standing here with my line
In the rushing, rustling waters of the Snake
A slight breeze pushing a piney scent
From the trees,
The sun warm, but not yet hot
Looking at the Tetons,
So small in the distance,
But so magnificent in reality,
There is no better place
To be.
