Alright, one question before we get started. How well would you pair with a rather sweet rosé? Feeling a bit bitey today. Still have a bit of wine in my glass and feeling peckish. Perhaps for this week's fuzzy, little open thread it's best if we take things outside, take a walk [link to Google Maps street view], get a bit of fresh air.
Rákosina stems from the Czech word rákos which means, "reed.” In 2002 this area of wetlands and ponds along the Odra River in northern Moravia near Ostrava was declared a National Nature Reserve. I had the good fortune to visit it this summer.
Those white specks on that fallen tree in the water are Gray Herons
With a group of friends we went on a very long walk through and around the reserve.
For part of our walk we had the Odra River on one side of us ...
… and this swampy canal on the other side.
We got a few preview peeks at the ponds.
Lots of Graylag Geese — and a Swan.
A fish food pellet silo.
My friends all stop at caterpillar crossings
My Google Maps link in the intro will drop you on this road in Street View. The old willows were so beautiful!
Who was Leoš? Perhaps a friend set up this cross to mark his favorite fishing spot.
View of the low mountains to the north as we near the spot we'd parked the cars.
Thanks for stopping by.
I'm out in the country this weekend, weather is cool and misty— but the ground is dry. Things were pretty wilted out in the garden. I emptied half a rain barrel on the plants and they perked up a bit. I picked the lone pumpkin finally, lovely little orange thing. There's quite a few butternut squash out there. I picked two to take home with us. Got any tips for cooking butternut squash? It’s good weather for stew, so that’s what we had for lunch, beef stew with onions, carrots, potatoes and seasoned with black pepper, paprika, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, marjoram, dill, Worcestershire sauce, and a good gloop of tomato ketchup.
As I sit here typing this, it has begun raining. A very welcome rain.
This is an open thread. I mean, like, really open-- so open you could post an ad for a rock crusher and it'd probably get a few recs.
Hmm, and I think there's still half a bottle of that wine—
