Fanatical Republican Extremist of the Day: Mark Samsel [1]

Welcome to what is the 1241st original profile here at “Fanatical Republican Extremist of the Day”, where we’ll be profiling Mark Samsel, a former two-term member of the Kansas House of Representatives who served in office for District 5 of that body from 2019 through 2023. You could peek at his voting record, and you might see some strangeness, like say, that he voted against a bill that would eliminate an exemption for men in Kansas to be charged with sexual assault if the victim was their spouse, but we have a pretty clear reason for profiling him.If you’re thinking our reason might have something to do with the fact that the photo of him we’re using on this profile is a mug shot… you would be correct. And it’s weirder than that.



Samsel was working as a substitute teacher at Wellsville High School until one day, all was not well in Wellsville. After a class where Samsel was openly talking with students about masturbation (and not in a sex education class), he started hugging a kid, talking about suicide and God, and then encouraging the kids to “procreate”. He then grabbed one kid and promised he would “put the fear of God in him” and gave the class permission to go ahead and kick one a kid square in the testicles, and per accounts, when no one took him up on the suggestion, he went ahead and tried himself.



While accusing the Kansas State Senate President of being “the devil” was the least offensive thing he did that day, it may have motivated him to want Mark Samsel disappeared from Kansas politics.



Needless to say, when the 2022 elections came around, Mark Samsel had a challenger in the GOP Primary, and lost his bid for re-election, getting just 36% of the vote after completely losing it. He was sentenced to one year’s probation for assaulting a teen in class, and was forced to undergo a mental health exam, which we think revealed he probably needed some treatment, and we hope he gets it.
