Believing the Worse and Rejecting the Best [1]

In 2016, it was laughable how many Americans believed the worst about a woman yet voted for the worse man alive. Calling Donald Trump the worst man living may be hyperbolic, but it is hard to deny once you examine the record. From the moment he rode down an escalator with Melania in tow and demeaned our neighbors to the south, his barrage of insults and anti-American values has been like drinking from a fire hose. The former President demeaned American intelligence, siding with Vladimir Putin at a joint press conference in Helsinki. Putin is one of the most vicious murderers and international criminals in history. The Russian president for life is currently engaged in an illegal war in Ukraine, raping and bombing men and women while stealing children from their homes and attempting to starve the remaining Ukrainian people, including the elderly.

Trump’s capitulation to murderers extends beyond the Russian regime. The killing and literal butchering of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi, allegedly ordered by Saudi Prince Mohammed bin Salman [accused by the same intelligence department Trump disparaged in Helsinki], was a jab in Trump’s fight with the media. The billions passed to his son-in-law, ipso facto his daughter, Ivanka, following his loss in 2020 have never been explained or investigated by the House Oversight Committee currently trying to tie President Biden to his son Hunter’s business dealings.

Although the media contributed to its own demise in the 2016 presidential campaign, Mr. Trump used the autocratic playbook in his attempt to destroy the fourth estate of American politics. The amount of distrust and giant seeds of discord sown into the field of American politics may take a generation to weed out. The term deep state has become such a conservative cliché that it is now grist for the GOP paranoia mill. Trump has so corrupted the right that their fake patriotism and false flag-waving are now tantamount to hanging dirty laundry on the backyard line. It started with Trump’s mockery of the late Senator John McCain, whose life-long injuries resulted from his capture and torture after being shot down in Vietnam. His growing number of sycophants heralded Trump as a truth-teller and funny.

Trump followed that up with his infamous press conference after the Charlottesville, Virginia riot, calling racists and anti-Semites ‘very fine people.’ The stereotyping of Judge Gonzalo Curiel, referring to Haiti and African nations as sh*thole countries, and being laughed at by the world of nations at the U.N. is part of a long list of embarrassments to America. Mocking the disabled and making jokes about raping writer E Jean Carroll are dwarfed by an Atlantic story about his despicable actions toward wounded Army Captain Luis Avila. Capt. Avila, who left pieces of himself on the battlefield, Trump allegedly told the former Head of the Joint Chiefs, General Mark Milley, not to ever let Avila or other wounded veterans appear at public events, saying, “Nobody wants to see that.”

So, while Mr. Trump instructs his minions in Congress to shut down the government in an ill-conceived attempt to stop his prosecution—ironically, one could say to defund the police—I hope the American people decide with their consciences and not their imaginations. In the words of Trump, Nobody [should] wants to see that.
