Good News Roundup 9/21 Government Shutdown Watch [1]
['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']
Date: 2023-09-21
All the signs point to a Federal Government shutdown. McCarthy could make a deal with Democrats and a few of the less wackadoodle Republicans to fund the government for some time, but that would almost certainly trigger Matt Gaetz to move for his removal. The only prediction I can make is that this will all end disastrously for them, and could be rather bad for the country. We could get another credit downgrade, for example, and a lot of people would have to wait to get paid, harming the economy in general.
That’s really bad, right? Well, maybe. Or maybe it will help us get our voters together so that we don’t have to take this any more, for very large values of “help” and “this”.
CNN: White House issues a stark warning over looming government shutdown
While President Biden has been in New York this week showcasing America’s global leadership on the world stage, extreme House Republicans are consumed by chaos and marching our country toward a government shutdown that would damage our communities, economy, and national security. Instead of following the bipartisan example of Republicans and Democrats in the Senate, extreme House Republicans continue to demand a reckless laundry list of partisan proposals as a condition of keeping the government open – from an evidence-free impeachment that even some of their own members don’t agree with, to reckless cuts to programs millions of hardworking families and seniors count on, to a litany of other extraneous ideological demands.
Because whatever damage a shutdown will do, they have convinced themselves that the Woke Dark Brandon coalition will be hurt worse.

Chris Hayes said yesterday to ignore the professional pollsters. These elections are

the ones where Democrats overwhelmingly “overperform”. No, we perform. We win elections. This is really us. The pollsters and the pundits and the Wrong-Wingers are overwhelmingly underperforming. In 30 special elections this year, Democrats improved their margins in 24 of them. The average improvement was 11 points.
x DEMS FLIP SEAT!
Democrat Hal Rafter just won his special election for the New Hampshire House in a landslide — 56-44!
Trump won this district in 2016 and 2020.
The GOP now holds a narrow 198-197 edge, despite a gerrymandered map that favors them.
But there’s more to come.

This has been an R+6 district, but Rafter won it by 12 points, a swing of 18 points.
If the Democrats win the November 7 special election as expected in a safe blue seat, the balance of power will be even in the NH House.
About time.

State election officials studying whether 14th Amendment disqualifies ‘insurrectionist’ Trump from ballot
One of those groups, Free Speech For People, sent letters on Wednesday to the top election officials in Florida, Ohio, Wisconsin, New Hampshire and New Mexico, urging them to invoke the “Constitution’s Insurrectionist Disqualification Clause” and use their authority to “exclude Mr. Trump from the ballot.” They previously sent letters to Benson in Michigan, as well as the secretaries of state in Georgia, Pennsylvania, Nevada and North Carolina. It seems unlikely that any secretary of state would take such aggressive action like this on their own, and even if they did, it would be immediately challenged in court. Protracted litigation, as happened last year against the GOP lawmakers, is much more likely. Multiple groups have promised to file lawsuits seeking to disqualify Trump.
As Nelson Mandela said,
It always seems impossible until it’s done.
Keep pushing.
