Ukrainian forces have brought heavy equipment (Strykers and Marders) beyond the anti-vehicle ditch and the dragons teeth for the first time. Ukraine’s counteroffensive has breached the first line of defense in some Russian positions in the south, with Kyiv’s forces recapturing the tiny village of Robotyne. “Ill-conceived and unsupported” RU counterattacks are being made on Bakhmut’s southern flank to urgently regain lost ground.

The Ukrainian General Staff stated that Ukrainian forces continued offensive operations and inflicted significant losses on Russian manpower and equipment in the Melitopol (western Zaporizhia Oblast) direction.[1] The Ukrainian General Staff also reported that Ukrainian forces continued offensive actions in the Bakhmut direction and are consolidating in newly secured lines.[2] The UK Ministry of Defense (MoD) assessed that Ukrainian forces secured positions in Klishchiivka (7km southwest of Bakhmut) and Andriivka (10km southwest of Bakhmut) and that Russian redeployments of airborne (VDV) forces from Bakhmut to the Zaporizhia direction have weakened Russian defenses around Bakhmut.[3] ISW had previously observed elements of the 83rd Separate Air Assault Brigade operating in Zaporizhia, although it is unclear how large a proportion of that unit was redeployed from Bakhmut.[4] Ukrainian Eastern Group of Forces Spokesperson Captain Ilya Yevlash stated that Ukrainian forces are preparing defensive positions before Russian forces renew their assaults in the Kupyansk-Lyman direction.[5]

Here’s how and why the Biden administration can legally lead the way for the G7 to make Putin pay billions of dollars in Central Bank of Russia revenues to start rebuilding Ukraine even as he tries to destroy it. The law is clear. Biden should use it NOW! https://t.co/JBcclEHzdj

Details: Tarnavskyi also reported the destruction of 48 pieces of Russian military equipment. Among them are three tanks, eight armoured combat vehicles, seven artillery systems and mortars, one multiple-launch rocket system, 14 UAVs, and 15 pieces of vehicles.

After a string of victories last year, military analysts thought Ukraine’s summer counteroffensive would attempt to split Russian supply lines in the south, driving a wedge between western Russia and Russian-occupied Crimea.

The Russian military expected the same and prepared accordingly. Moscow shifted troops, dug fresh fortifications and scattered land mines across the relatively flat fields of Ukraine’s south. When Ukraine began its attack, even with fresh supplies of advanced western tanks and equipment, it faced a prepared defense of the sort not seen in Europe since World War II.

Ukraine surged forward in June, but quickly lost tanks, troops and other armored vehicles to dense minefields and prepared Russian troops. Kyiv’s forces initially used American tactics better suited for the last century than the current-day battlefield in Ukraine.

Since August, the fighting has concentrated around the small hamlet of Robotyne. The Ukrainians are fighting to widen the breach with hopes they can capitalize on their hard-earned gains and inch forward to the next line of Russian defenses.
