Trump's interview with Kristen Welker was actually pretty good [1]

I listened to the podcast version of Meet the Press just before I sat down to write this. She did a very good job, despite what Keith Olbermann is saying. She challenged him all through the interview. She told him more than once that Democrats aren't killing newborn babies (yes, he said that). She questioned him several times on why he didn't call out the National Guard on January 6. His story is that it was Pelosi's responsibility and that she refused it. (She says that didn't happen.) She questioned him (and again and again) on his views on abortion, on Ukraine, on China. Yes, he spewed out his lies, but she did not let them go unchallenged.
What really bothers me about some of what Olbermann (and some on social media) are saying is that I also feel they're holding her to a higher standard of what a male reporter would judged by. One thing that people need to remember is that NBC is not Fox. Fox's gotcha formula for doing "news" is just to further their political agenda. NBC doesn’t play that game, nor should they. They're in the business of doing actual news. Journalism --- real journalism --- is not a popularity contest. It's to report the facts. (Don’t forget, Fox is not a news provider and never should be thought of one.)
Interviewing is not as easy as people think it is. (Ask me ... I've interviewed many well-known musicians. They can be difficult at times.) You have to not only prepare for your questions, but also a strategy for your subject. The last thing Welker wanted was for Trump to walk out. Imagine the headlines on right-wing media if he had. She handled him well. She wasn’t chatty or sweet with him. She was firm.
And all the complaints about Welker are precisely what right-wing media wants. It gives them something to tell THEIR base about. (And Fox did exactly that with Keith Olbermann's comments about Welker.)
It's people like Welker (yes, and Chuck Todd) who are doing the job they should be doing. It's not an easy job. Welker should be commended. She’s done well in her past work. And if this is any example, she’ll do well in her new job.
