On Tuesday, the CDC recommended that all Americans six months and older receive the new COVID booster. On Wednesday, Governor DeSantis repudiated this recommendation and advised that Florida residents under the age of 65 skip the updated boosters. DeSantis blatantly lied that the vaccines have “shown little to no benefit to prevent Covid-19 infection.”
No doubt DeSantis welcomes this opportunity to shore up his dying campaign by trying to resurrect the perverse “advantage” he had among Republicans for his COVID actions.
This comes as COVID cases in FL more than doubled in the last week of August compared to the month before, according to the Miami Herald. And this is the state in which:
During the 2021 delta wave, Florida residents died at a higher rate, adjusted for age, than people in almost every other state, a New York Times analysis of federal data found. The Sunshine State accounted for 14% of the nation’s deaths between July and October 2021, even though it represents only 7% of the American population.
DeSantis echoes the position of his Surgeon General, Joseph Ladapo, a lethally dangerous quack who has promoted hydroxychloroquine and Ivermectin. According to the Tampa Bay Times, his Department of Health “removed from an analysis data that showed contracting COVID-19 could increase the chances of cardiac-related deaths much more than vaccines.” Hydroxychloroquine, on the other hand does increase serious heart rhythm problems, as of course, does COVID. According to the Herald, Ladapo’s
suggestion that younger Floridians are somehow naturally protected from the worst effects of COVID-19 isn’t supported by data. Of the state’s 90,000 COVID-19 deaths, 22% were people under 65, the Herald reported. Of the 23,000 deaths that happened during the delta wave, 39% were among those younger adults, the Times reported. The vast majority of them were unvaccinated or had not finished their two-dose regimen.
That’s about a 20,000 death toll under 65, many of which were avoidable. Hundreds of thousands of years of productive lives, parents and children, economic and cultural contribution, lost to ignorance, venality and ambition.

Ladapo has been part of the deadly COVID-denier community since the earliest days of the virus, and contributed to the Trump administration’s catastrophic response to the virus long before the vaccine.
He is In the picture at the right, with Scott Atlas, Martin Kulldorff, Cody Meissner, and Jay Bhattacharya, meeting with President Trump in the Oval Office in August 2020. The House Select Subcommittee Report on the Coronavirus, quotes Trump CDC Director Robrt Redfield saying, Dr. Atlas brought these individuals to the White House specifically “to convince people that herd immunity was going to save us, and this thing was going to go bye-bye.”
COVID denialism on masks, vaccines, and lockdowns, is a winning issue in the Republican primary. DeSantis’s ads accuse Trump, the only one more lethal than DeSantis on COVID, of being “pro-lockdown.” DeSantis has been frustrated because the decline in COVID cases has decreased the salience of the issue in the primary, so the sociopathic Governor has jumped on the renewed vaccine issue as a way to restart his sagging campaign.
Let’s review:
A new wave of COVID is threatening FL and the rest of the US.
Since the advent of the vaccines, COVID has killed tens of thousands of people in Florida under 65.
A new vaccine can save tens of thousands of lives of people of all ages
DeSantis is recommending against people under 65 getting the vaccine
Let’s apply the relevant law:
Florida To establish involuntary manslaughter, the prosecutor must show that the defendant acted with "culpable negligence." Florida statutes define culpable negligence as a disregard for human life while engaging in wanton or reckless behavior. Federal Involuntary manslaughter occurs when —In the commission of an unlawful act not amounting to a felony, or in the commission in an unlawful manner, or without due caution and circumspection, of a lawful act which might produce death.
