Welcome to another fuzzy cup of coffee. Ah, brings me back to my college days, fuzzy coffee …

This week I'm kicking off my weekly open thread with another slideshow from my summer vacation.

Landek Park

Near Ostrava, in the Czech Republic, lies Landek Park, home of the Anselm Coal Mine.

Inside the building on the right ...

The changing room for the coal miners

We went on a tour of the museum which presents the history of mining rescue equipment and the people who used it.

A memorial to the people who lost their lives saving the lives of others

A fairly late addition to the mining rescue team were mountaineers. Also seen here is a nice piece of modern tech, the little black and yellow submersible robotic camera in the foreground.

The air pump for a 1920 Siebe-Gorman diving kit

So shiny!

After touring the above ground portion of the museum, we went down the mining elevator about 30 feet to the upper level of the Anselm Coal Mine itself.

On display were manikins posed as if they were performing various mining techniques used over the centuries that coal was mined in this area. Also on display were the tools and machines used in the actual mining. Some of the conveyors and digging machines were actually turned on for us visitors— giving us a hint of the level of noise miners dealt with.

A vein of coal through layers of shale

A manikin hard at work with a drill

Some impressive hydraulics holding up the roof until the bracing could be installed

One of the machines. The clever spiral digging wheel channels the coal straight onto the conveyor

Closer look at those teeth

One of the mine's buildings has found a new use as a hall for concerts, plays and balls.

Down a pleasant wooded path next to the mine you can find some of the only exposed veins of coal— well, in the world— I’m guessing.

See those black diagonal veins of coal? Now you can see better why the whole region is practically hollow.

Thanks for stopping by!

This is an open thread, all topics are welcome.
