Mitt Romney's Book could very well be a "quadruple header" of damage for Republicans. [1]

As we all know now, Romney does not intend to run for the Senate after this term. In a sense this is sad, because despite of his vast hypocrisies, Mitt has been practically the only Republican/Conservative leader who has been willing to take on Trumpites out loud since Trump took office.

There is ample good news behind this, I think. A lot of this stems from his impending new book, as described in “Business Insider.” The Insider is quoting David Brooks, which I try to avoid doing, but what the heck.

Republican politicians are worried that Mitt Romney's new book will reveal their true feelings and private conversations about Trump. Sen. Mitt Romney announced that he's retiring from the Senate at the end of his term.

In October, he'll release a book detailing how some of his fellow Republicans feel about Trump.

The development has concerned his GOP colleagues, according to The New York Times.

Republicans should well be worried, because it seems clear that Romney is going to directly quote a bunch of them saying, in private, that a) they can’t stand Trump, and b) they are to scared to say so in a public forum such as impeachment votes or the media. This, of course leads to two other conclusions: c) that Trump sucks even worse than they are willing to say, and d) that the “whispering Republicans” are hypocrites who are far more concerned with getting re-elected than with leading the nation where it needs to go.

This all, in my mind, simple adds to the risks that face Republicans in both the House and Senate that are substantially greater that the polls would suggest. (As Jennifer Rubin recently stated, polls are meant to be ignored.)

There is another theme in all of this, out of the WaPo: The Republican “Doom Loop.”

Opinion How the ‘MAGA doom loop’ is already threatening Trump’s 2024 chances For almost three years now, Republicans have defended or embraced Donald Trump’s authoritarianism — from lies about his 2020 loss to inciting an insurrection — which backfired as Americans proved unexpectedly eager to vote in defense of democracy in the 2022 elections as well as in contests this year. But Republicans aren’t giving up — they’re going even further. To an unappreciated degree, they have responded to these electoral losses with even more flagrantly anti-democratic maneuvers all around the country. The pattern is becoming clear: Even as voters are mobilizing to protect democracy at the ballot box, Republicans are redoubling their commitment to the former president’s anti-majoritarian mode of politics. And this, in turn, is motivating voters even more.

As people who know me from my former annexes in the Good News Roundup, I love feedback loops. This one looks like a doozy. Republicans are fast learning that when their rank dishonesty becomes public, it doesn’t work to lie your way out of it. Nor does it work to pretend that your fascism is an effective substitute for Democracy. As noted in the second article, a substantial majority of Americans is beginning to recognize what a threat the anti-democratic (small d) GOP has become in so many states.
