Enough of the Mitt Praise [1]

The recent come to Jesus moment of Utah Senator Willard Mitt Romney is overblown and too little too late. In an upcoming book, Romney revealed that he warned then-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell about the real danger of riots on January 6. Aside from Senator McConnell predictably burying his head in the sand, why didn’t Romney go public? I believe in the adage that honor and integrity are what you do when no one is watching. Mr. Romney flipped that maxim on its head when he shirked his responsibility to his colleagues, the soon-to-be-injured Capitol and Metropolitan police officers, and most of all, the American people by not going public. In the soon-to-be-released book, Romney also warns that many of his Republican colleagues “really don’t believe” in the Constitution they swore to uphold.

Mr. Romney, whose term does not end until 2025, is seemingly starting a presale book tour—in tell-all fashion, talking about trivial matters like Democratic Senator(s) low exercise bike settings—in comparison to his, to the more sad and cowardly discussions with fellow Republican Senators about the unfitness of Donald Trump to be President. Senator Romney’s duplicitous nature should be no surprise to anyone with a political pulse. After lambasting Mr. Trump prior to his 2016 victory over Hillary Clinton, Romney showed up at Trump Tower hat in hand, seeking the job of Secretary of State with the incoming administration. The photos of Romney breaking bread by candlelight with Mr. Trump were revolting to those who had praised Mr. Romney for speaking truth to power during the campaign.

In March of 2016, Romney said that [Donald Trump has neither] “the temperament nor the judgment to be president.” Less than a year later, following their now infamous dinner, Romney said of Trump, “I had a wonderful evening with President-elect Trump. We had another discussion about affairs throughout the world, and these discussions I’ve had with him have been enlightening, and interesting, and engaging. I’ve enjoyed them very, very much.” The acquiescence of Romney came after Mr. Trump made a not-so-veiled sexual innuendo about Mitt dropping to his knees pleading for his endorsement in Romney’s failed 2012 presidential bid. “I don’t know what happened to him,” Trump said during a March 2016 rally in Portland, Maine. “You can see how loyal he is. He was begging for my endorsement. I could have said, ‘Mitt, drop to your knees.’ He would have dropped to his knees.”

Romney is now on a campaign to expose the dirty secrets of his party and fellow Senators, when, as my great-granny used to say, “ sweep around your own front door.” Of course, Senator Romney is not alone in his flipping and flopping. The symbol for the GOP should be changed from an elephant to a fish. Chris Christie, who is now verbally assassinating Trump, skirted the line many times. Nikki Haley, Ted Cruz, and Lindsey Graham have said respectively Mr. Trump either ‘let us down,’ called him a sniveling coward or a “kook.” So before I join the all-hail Mitt Romney choir, I will wait to see what tune he sings in November 2026.
