Green Heron have been one of those special birds for Ms. JG and me. Great Blue Heron were good sources of action shots and were plentiful, but the Green Heron won our hearts with it being hard to find — until it wasn’t. I’m sure many of you understand that phrase with birds you appreciate.

You may think that the Green Heron wins all of its encounters.

But that just isn’t true. Watch this video where a bit of wiggling allows the dragonfly to go free.

What the? How did that happen? Maybe a quick drink will take the bad taste of defeat out of my beak.

On the lookout for more.

See the blue target that the heron is spying, flying in the upper left corner, out of focus? see blurred object in corner up close

At first, catch whatever part you can catch.

Then make sure you get something other than a wing or leg.

Then try to rotate the dragonfly for a clean gulp

This was the crowd-catching photo at the beginning. Hope it got your attention for this Bucket.

This is the actual shot. Lightroom and cropping did the rest for the photo above it.

Here is the Green Heron observing its surroundings.

Upon seeing an eagle overhead, it got excited and raised its crest and paced.

Another interesting behavior of the Green Heron is its vibrating throat.

You can tell that I am enjoying using video with my new camera. It’s so easy to do.

Some photos showing what else the Green Heron likes to eat:

And a Green Heron on the wing.

Oh, no. What was I thinking. I’ve taken up the whole Bucket.

Please add your comments and photos to the Green Heron’s — and my — excitement.
