Being Well: BIENESTAR in Mexico. [1]

In addition, the Banco de Bienestar pays residents 65 years and older a pension of MXN$4,800 bi-monthly, equivalent to US$140 per month. (Contrast this with the attitude of the British government, which froze my pension because I’d emigrated. Thanks for nothing.) A couple of years ago they spotted an aortic aneurism during a scan, not urgent, but once they spot something here, they don’t let you go. And so I go every year by appointment for a CAT scan. This involves first getting blood work (free), then the next day I go to the general hospital for a scan.

So two days ago I reported at 8AM, and by 9.30 I was lying on the scanner watching the spinning lights. By 10.15 I was on my way home.

Yesterday at 9AM I reported for my diagnostic interview, which began with a seemingly irrelevant conversation about what I’ve been doing since retiring. It turned out that this was the part of the interview to assess my neurological condition, i.e. do I have dementia? Seems fair enough for a man of 76!

Apparently my aneurism is still at the ‘safe’ size, but I’ve been referred to the specialist cardiac hospital for further diagnostics. It is all very efficient.

I guess if you’re American, by now you are expecting the kicker in the story. And you’re right, here it comes! What did all this COST?

NOTHING. It cost nothing. It could be that way for you too: Except, you keep voting for the wrong people.
