Well, here goes one less “reasonable” Republican.
Utah Sen. Mitt Romney says that he will not run for reelection next year.
According to Politico, “I have spent my last 25 years in public service of one kind or another. At the end of another term, I’d be in my mid-eighties. Frankly, it’s time for a new generation of leaders. They’re the ones that need to make the decisions that will shape the world they will be living in,” Romney said in a statement.
But he said Wednesday he didn’t believe either President Joe Biden or former President Donald Trump were willing to confront big challenges like climate change and the debt.
According to the NY Times, Romney said that both Trump and Biden “should follow his lead and bow out to pave the way for younger candidates...”
Politico:
The Utah senator is one of the most distinguished figures in the GOP — serving as a moderate Massachusetts governor, winning the party’s presidential nomination in 2012 and then serving in the Senate since 2019 as a check on Trumpism.
Given the Republican strength in Utah, this seat should easily remain in Republican control.
