McCarthy Launches Impeachment Inquiry [1]

Cue “Send in the clowns.” McCarthy, who has been jerking around all summer over impeachment, has made a formal move to start the circus:

McCarthy calls for formal impeachment inquiry into Biden

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced Tuesday he is calling on his committees to open a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, even as they have yet to prove allegations he directly profited off his son’s foreign business deals. The move comes amid increasing pressure from his right flank to move ahead with the inquiry, including some on his far right who have threatened to oust McCarthy from his speakership if he does not move swiftly enough on an impeachment inquiry. McCarthy is also trying to secure votes as part of negotiations to keep the government funded beyond the September 30 deadline to avert a shutdown.

And of course, he picked “see evil, hear evil, and speak evil” to lead the charge:

McCarthy said he is tapping House chairmen Reps. James Comer of Kentucky, Jason Smith of Missouri and Jim Jordan of Ohio to lead the inquiry.

Never mind — especially never mind — that there’s no evidence whatsoever that Biden has done anything wrong (other than denying Trump his rightful place on the throne), as even some far-right Republicans have admitted: A House Freedom Caucus member said there's no evidence Biden's committed a 'high crime or misdemeanor'

A far-right House Freedom Caucus member said on Sunday that any evidence linking President Joe Biden to any high crime or misdemeanor "doesn't exist right now" as some Republicans push to impeach him.

Marjorie Taylor Greene, who had filed impeachment charges before Biden was even sworn in (a model the Wisconsin Republicans are now trying to emulate), immediately denounced Buck, saying he was looking to be hired in the Biden administration. Uh huh.

Of course, all this is being driven by Trump, who doesn’t want to campaign as an impeached president against an unimpeached one.

My betting is that impeachment will fail in the House by a narrow margin, because just enough Republicans in districts Biden won will vote against it, urged on by Senators who have just enough political sense to realize what a major disaster it will be for them. This will be followed by further howls from Trump about RINOs and “traitors,” leading to further GOP losses in the House in 2024.

But McCarthy will get to stay Squeaker until then. Which is really what he cares most about.
