Redwood Legacy

About 25 years ago I planted 100 redwood trees along one edge of our oatfield pasture. The original impetus was the obtrusive security light installed by our flaky neighbor. My solution, obviously, was long term. I planted 3 rows of 33 trees in an alternating pattern. We used drip irrigation from our very low flow well for the first three years. From then on the trees captured sufficient moisture from the fog during the 8 month dry season. All survived and now compose a forest 40 feet wide and 500 feet long, about 25 to 30 feet tall. Redwood branches start from the lower trunk, so the whole forest was very dense, almost impassible.

Yesterday my son drove me up there, a point quite far from the house. He said he wanted to show me something. When we arrived, Mrs. side pocket and my daughter-in-law were there.

We walked toward the trees, and what was there was a total surprise.

Through the gate was an open grove, a floor of redwood needles, and more surprises.

Boombox next to the chair was playing Dire Straits. Bench is a redwood slab.

Picnic table laden with a gourmet lunch, and flowers.

We had purchased that table 60 years ago, and it had been showing its age. Here it is repainted and repaired; another surprise.

Between the chairs is a solar powered fountain.

There’s even a place to rest after lunch.

The photos can’t come close to describing this grove. It’s totally private, can’t be seen by anyone not on the property, and it’s about a 10 minute walk from the house, though one can drive there in good weather. It will be magical in winter as well, with gentle rain or fog drip filtering through the branches.

I subsequently planted 20 more redwoods near to the well. As we have learned, these trees capture so much fog drip that the aquifer for the well is enhanced all year.

It pleases me to be able to share this grove with others, even virtually, and hopefully some of y’all in real life.
