CROQUET [1]

['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

I am constantly hearing, on the new, and from friends, that our Prez, Joe Biden is too old, is past it, and, if you read the right-wing news, he is demented, insane, delusional and worse.

I get it that he is old. So am I. He is eighty. I am eighty-four. I run a business, by myself, and have been doing that for forty years. And I think I am still getting better at it. So? Eighty? Too old?

Instead, I look at what has been accomplished since 2020, and it is quite amazing. Prior to Biden, we had an economy run on Milton Friedman, Chicago School of Economics, supply-side principles (in my mind, these theories encourage and support fiscal gluttony and legitimizes legal theft)

Biden, instead, has turned the country 180 degrees, insisting, and putting legislation in place, to support workers, support manufacturing, support unions, all ideas that, for the last forty years, since Reagan was president, were considered ill-advised and economically impractical.

In the first day of Biden’s presidency, he pulled the US back into the Paris Climate Accord, and promised to curb emissions. He has appointed more judges than any other president, the majority being women, and more than 50% being being of color, with the appointees being experienced, unlike those apologist for judges, Amy Comey Barrett, Aileen Cannon, Brett Kavanagh.

And then there is the stuff which didn’t happen. He didn’t take a strong stand about reproductive health care, sitting in the no-man’s land of personally not believing a woman should have a say in what happens to their bodies, with, women should be able to say “No” and have it heard. He did though, this last May, drop in on an Emily’s List dinner (Emily’s, short for “Early Money Is Like Yeast”, an organization devoted to electing pro-choice Democratic women).

Croquet is a nasty game. At any one time a play can decided to got for a hoop, or, strike another’s ball out of play. In golf, you do this to yourself when the ball goes into a bunker or off the greenway. In croquet, another player does it for you.

And that takes me to Mich McConnell. Mitch McConnell plays croquet in politics. When he was able to, he deliberately, cynically, and drunk with power, blocked Obama’s campaign promises as much as he could. He made up rules that suited his power-mad journey, because he could. He was quite happy, and thought it okay, to, publicly say that his job, his JOB, was to make sure Obama was a one-term president, because he could. And Obama had no clue how to deal with this type of intransigence, this willful stupidity, all in the name of keeping power.

Even now, with McConnell, on the television, freezing, having petit mall episodes, maybe having small strokes, brain infarcts, he is firm in his desire to stay in office, to stay making trouble, because he can.

We live in a society where fiscal gluttony is rewarded, one that allows those who can, do what they want, because they can, because nothing, legal, is stopping them. McConnell is ethically bankrupt, because he can be.

Biden plays croquet with an eye to everyone getting the best game they can.

I reluctantly voted for him. I am so glad I did.
