A Psychic and a President [1]

For the past few years, I've been slowly ( George R. R. Martin levels of speed) working on a book about President Harding. During my two years of research, I thought it would be fun, given the affinity Mrs. Harding had for the supernatural to consult with a medium and attempt to reach them. Due to Florence Harding's enthusiasm for Astrology, fortune telling, and mysticism, for the book’s appendices, it seemed only natural to pay a visit with our modern-day Jeane Dixon (Presidential Psychic), to have the last word on this running debate on Harding. Eventually, I would consult with three, a medium, an Astrologer who created personalized charts of the Hardings, and Nan Britton (Presidential mistress); and finally, I contacted a noted spiritual healer who uses ayahuasca to commune with the dead. I did not disclose that I was writing a book to them, did not seek their assistance beyond their typical services, did not ask if I could share their names, and frankly lied to them, claiming that I was researching my ancestors. This was not done out of malice, but for extra security, I didn't want their possible inclusion in a book to influence their findings.

The Medium specializes not in contacting the dead, but in sensing their presence and essence from images or objects. Since I was fresh out of Harding-owned objects, though I'm sure Peter Harding (a Friend and relative of the President) would have obliged me, I presented a series of images to the medium. They ranged from young portraits of Warren and Florence, images of the first couple later in life, a picture of Nan and Elizbeth (Harding's Mistress and their illegitimate daughter) taken during the 1930s, and images of them later in life. I did not reveal the location of where the images where taken, the connection between the subjects, and the medium had no idea until afterwards that the jovial handsome man in the pictures was a President. Over the next hour, she studied them and her reactions ran the gamut of emotions. Harding, even in his current state, still appears to have a magnetic power of the opposite sex. Seeing him, she took a deep and sudden intake of air before smiling broadly.

"Wow! Very vain, very consumed with self. But, oh my..."

She then turned the picture over and giggled. Next was Florence, poor Florence. As stated earlier, I have a lot of sympathy for the First Lady, and I think people's reactions to her are quite unjustified. But, at that point, I was accustomed to the typical criticisms. So, it was with great satisfaction that I saw the medium instantly show empathy for her. She shook her head and started patting the image. "Poor Thing" I could hear her say softly. The medium placed Harding's image face up again and her impression of him seemed a bit more hardened.

Lastly, I showed the images of Nan and Elizabeth. The medium seemed to grow uneasy.

"Bro, you need to warn people when you bring this kind of thing in here."

Evidently, she was not a fan of Nan, not at all, and commented that the young Elizbeth, at least privately, resented her mother. Showing her the press photo of Elizabeth she was able to tell me that her birthplace was Chicago, that she was dressed for this picture against her will, and then she grew silent. She then looked up at me coldly. The medium closed her eyes and in perhaps the most grandiose and melodramatic manner possible stated that she was now at peace and tied to a male presence.

When I approached the Astrologer, he was a bit annoyed because I couldn't provide the exact birth hours of the people I was asking him to make profiles of, apparently, that could strengthen the accuracy of the project. I explained that these were long deceased family members and their times of birth were either not recorded or preserved.

The Harding astrological chart reminded me of the ominous predictions made to Florence by the famed fortune teller leading up to the Republican convention. His fortune lies heavily with the house of death. I was interested to discover a different meaning of the aforementioned astrological house. The house of death is symbolic of change. According to one chart that determines your personality and future based on the date of your birth, Harding's chart is governed by the eighth house of Scorpio.

The Astrological charts show that the house is claimed to be the most powerful. The people who have this house in their charts all share a common thread, the house of death. The Scorpio's eighth house is related in all areas to the person's death, birth, secrets, sexuality, resourcefulness, and destiny. It also relates to a person's astro entities, their spirits, unseen forces, and the depth that divides a person between life and the spirit world. Oddly, and not common according to the Astronomer, Harding's eighth house also rules over his legacy and inheritance. In matters of love, this kind of person is prone towards sacrifice or being drawn to a person who is themselves not free to pursue mutual affection. Sound like someone?

Florence Harding's chart is governed by the power of the sun, a sign linked with healers, and the dominance of a father figure. Great compassion and a thirst for affection. A fuller portrait of Florence seemed to be developing in my mental gazetteer.

Finally, I visited the spiritual healer, his darkened office smelled of Nag Champa Incense, and had bedding on this tiled floor. Apparently, he was going to organize a journey that evening, a ritual where participants take ayahuasca, confront their darkness, and cleanse their spirits. I don't know why but when I told him my usual story that I was trying to commune with departed ancestors he seemed to smile back knowingly. He lowered his head, and his twinkling green eyes were visible from his glasses, inviting me to tell the truth. I don't know why, but his very nature seemed to be welcoming honesty, I told him the truth. I was writing a book about strangers; about long-departed strangers and I was trying to better understand them and maybe even say hello.

The delighted older man giggled and shook his head. He then took his hand and playfully tapped my forehead. Looking at the images of Elizbeth and her parents he gazed at them deeply and silently. There was the subtlest hint of sorrow in his eyes. He then looked up at me and told me to forget about reaching them, it was useless. The man had passed on long ago, the woman also couldn't be reached, and the young child was now happy in the presence of a male figure. He said that if I was determined to understand them I should welcome them into my dreams each night before falling asleep and ask them to awaken me, so I could remember the dream’s details. “Do it for a week and if you get no bites, that’s your answer.”

Telling Peter Harding (the great nephew of Harding) of the events later on he mentioned in his usual fashion that he adored taking ayahuasca. He asked if I had received any dreams from Harding and told me that Jim (The President's Grandson) often has such dreams of his grandfather. Later on, he told me about one of his dreams, the location of which was of all places the Harding Tomb.
