Navarro Convicted of Contempt of Congress [1]

Well, that didn’t take long:

Peter Navarro convicted of contempt for defying Jan. 6 committee subpoena

In a federal trial in Washington that included just one day of testimony from three prosecution witnesses, and no witnesses for the defense, the 74-year-old former trade adviser was convicted of the two contempt charges he faced, each punishable by up to a year behind bars.

It was just the other day that Navarro’s claim to executive privilege was shot down. Then Chris Hayes showed him begging for money (sorry, no link) to pay his legal expenses. Well, at least his trial was short enough to cut those down.

Once he lost on executive privilege (as did Steve Bannon, similarly convicted), the outcome was pretty much a foregone conclusion — the prosecution only had to prove that Navarro was served a subpoena, and he ignored it. Navarro’s lawyers tried to argue that he didn’t have the documents the committee wanted, but Navarro himself had never made that claim to the committee.

Navarro will almost certainly appeal, as Bannon has done. (Though it’s hard to see on what grounds.) While this doesn’t directly reflect on Trump and his trials, it does serve as further notice that thinking you are above the law does not impress the courts.
