Sometimes press releases happen on Labor Day weekend because they really, really want you to forget about what just happened. This shooting happened on August 24th. The body cam footage was finally released a couple days ago. There has been some coverage on this incident, but it’s totally understandable if you are just finding out right now.

Ta’Kiya Young was accused of stealing liquor by a Kroger employee. Two police officers confronted her after she got inside her car. You can see from my screenshot posted above that one officer decided to stand in front of a suspect’s vehicle.

Let’s talk about this for a moment. Your parents probably taught you to be careful around cars, especially if there is a driver inside. Now some people might choose to put their bodies in front of occupied vehicles to protest things like police shooting Black people. But any adult knows that when you do that, you are putting your life in the hands of a driver that you don’t know and who probably doesn’t like you very much.

So why would a police officer decide to stand in front of a suspect’s car? It doesn’t strike me as a sound tactical decision. If the suspect tries to drive away, the police can still use her plate number to find where she lives. The officer put himself in unnecessary danger.

There are already conservative commentators defending this shooting. But if you watch this video (TRIGGER WARNING), then you see the officer pull out his sidearm BEFORE she starts to move the car.

Some have said that the officer was justified because she tried to run him over. However, he could have stepped out of the way. From a purely self-preservation standpoint, steI strongly suspect that Ta’Kiya Young made the decision to flee when she saw the officer draw his weapon.

The officer who shot Ta'Kiya Young should be charged with murder. As far as I can tell, the other officer might be innocent. But if he has noticed his partner stand in front of that car, he should have said something.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that she was pregnant and I haven't seen any anti-abortion people protest the death of her fetus yet.
